**Road Rash** started [a thread](http://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?threadid=189311) in Cafe Society about my favorite comedian, the late Bill Hicks. Things took a bad turn when a newly-registered poster named **Hully Gully** made some disparaging comments about Hicks, which **schplebordnik** then implied came directly from [a _New York Times_ article](http://www.nytimes.com/2003/06/08/arts/television/08METC.html) (free registration required for link). Not only was it obvious that **Hully Gully** had never even listened to Hicks, but the article was an inaccurate piece of shit.
So in comes our favorite annoying, purple, twit. You know, the one who never really has anything interesting to say, so she tries to draw attention to herself by posting entirely in purple? Yeah, her. Having evidently never listened to Hicks, but being inspired by either **Hully Gully** ’s post or the _Times_ article, she offered up the following jewel (quoted here in black text for your viewing pleasure):

Now let me get this straight. You never listened to the man’s comedy. Either a _Times_ article by an author with a stick up his ass, or a poster who read said article, gave you the impression that Hicks wasn’t funny. This makes you thankful that the man died of pancreatic cancer at the age of 32.

I’ve had the unfortunate experience of listening to Bill Hicks, hell I’ve even **bought** and listened to all four of his concert CD’s, thanks to the dreadfully misguided advice of a friend.
Tell me something, **neutron star** , if Hicks was such a _cutting edge_ and _out there_ comedian who wanted nothing more then to _stick it to the man_, then why did he puss out and tone down his material in order to get on Letterman and other network talk shows?
He may have talked a big game, (and actually he couldn’t even do that, ) but when it came down to it, he was a coward, who censored himself simply to try and get his own Tv show. The Times article was hardly bullshit and hardly a hachet job. Truthfully, the article probably gave Hicks more column space then he actually deserved and he sure as fuck doesn’t deserve to be up there with Lenny Bruce.

Uh…yeah. Well, see it’s generally frowned upon to barge in on what is obviously a fan thread and post pointless, negative drivel. It becomes worse when that drivel appears to come straight from some other source. You mentioned “American Gladiators” and “New Kids on the Block” specifically as Bill’s targets. So did the article from this morning’s paper.
You can see how that would lead us to conclude that you don’t have an original opinion on the matter, and thus have probably never listened to the material. Well, apparently I was wrong and you have listened to it, but you’d still rather not be bothered to come up with your own opinion.

I used that phrase as a descriptive term so people reading the post wouldn’t scratch their heads and wonder “Who is this **Hully Gully** guy?” You’re trying to pick out insults that just aren’t there. If I wanted to be a jackass about post counts, I think I would have used a phrase with a bit more bite to it than “newly-registered poster.”

Not that it has anything to do with anything, but why would you buy all four CDs at once from a comdian you’ve never heard? Wouldn’t you start out with just one to see if you liked him?

It was opinionated and misleading. It says Hicks was cut from the Letterman show, but doesn’t say it was due to sponsor pressure. It makes him sound like a loser and doesn’t mention his 12 other successful Letterman appearances. It also refrains from mentioning his three HBO specials, perhaps because that might make the reader think that he actually had talent.

Hmmm.
I dunno. Why can’t **Hully Gully** and **Raisinbread** have an opinion? It doesn’t jive with yours, but so what? I’m sure you don’t think that everything that you think is great is thought to be great by everyone else? Of course not, why should you?
Even if their criticism of Hicks seems parroted or insensitive, so what? It’s still their opinion.
I don’t think that they are personally attacking you, but they are taking issue with your description of Hicks. I listened to some of his stuff on one of those links and I was under-impressed myself. But you like him and that’s great too.
Now, if you want to just generally rant about someone’s (Raisinbread) posting style, have at it. I just don’t think you should use that thread as a jumping off point. 'Course, you are free to disagree with my opinion - just don’t beat me up for having it.
