All three.
As others have said, if you object to the food that a cat needs to eat, then you shouldn’t have a cat.
All three.
As others have said, if you object to the food that a cat needs to eat, then you shouldn’t have a cat.
Trying to raise a kitten as a vegetarian is animal abuse, clear and simple.
She should get herself a turtle insead.
As cats get older, they even develop allergies to cat food with grains in it. We’ve just put our 17-year-old cat on a hypoallergenic cat food (at $40 per 6 lb bag, and at the advice of a vet) and it immediately cleared up her vomiting problem. If humans want to experiment with their own diets, no sweat; but an animal can’t tell you it’s unhappy or in distress until it falls ill.
Fuck that. Tell her Oak says she’s too stupid to own a cat. Have her give it to someone with more sense.
When I was a little kid, I found a giant toad in the yard and I decided to keep it as a pet. I made a little box for him, with wooden sides and little windows that I filled in with mesh screens. I kept him in my room; but I didn’t know how to feed him, so I just gave him lettuce. He never ate it. Then one day he hopped out of his cage, in desperation, and was attacked by the dogs, who killed him in very short order. I found him under a radiator, dead. It was one of the saddest moments of my life, and I regret to this day that I didn’t get some kind of a book on how to care for toads or something, and assumed that he would be happy eating lettuce.
The moral of this story is DON’T FEED VEGETABLES TO A FUCKING CAT!
Goddamned stupid people.
Bless her Heart, I suppose, but, as said well here, that’s not a proper diet for a cat. Lifelong cat owner, first cat slept in my crib from 3 months old. I’m a long time vegetarian as well, and have never had any conflict with feeding my many cats their proper diet. When young and poor, I fed my cats the cheaper food, and, when an older kitty developed diabetes, educated myself on specifics on pet food to help him out. Changed to a better diet, and he lived to be 17 years old.
With my current batch of cats, I’ve only fed them really good food, and it shows. But, it’s all meat based, cats have to have that. To expand on the above ASPCA vegan cat link, here’s a good one explaining cat’s dietary needs.
I hope that if Skald’s friend sees the facts, she will be happy with feeding her cat the best food possible. I’d think that would satisfy any “gotta have proper food” mindset. If not, then the poor kitty needs an intervention for it’s health.
I vote all three.
I expected your Bulgarian Kitty to be wearing a fur hat, like all Bulgarians in old WW2 pictures do.
Here’s something from PETA on how to raise a vegetarian cat or dog
Actually, most turtles are omnivores that require animal protein, so please don’t raise your turtle on a vegetarian diet either.
All three and more. As everyone else said, tell her that it’s a disaster waiting to happen, and if she’s that dedicated to animal rights, what she’d be doing could be considered animal cruelty.
I wouldn’t trust PETA if they told me the sun rises in the East.
Bless her heart?
Fuck her heart. With a chainsaw.
They’re lumping cats and dogs into one category, which is ridiculous in this context.
Dogs and people are in one category–omnivores.
Cats are in a different category–carnivores.
Maybe some of the confusion arises from the fact that cats often like to have some non-meat foods. But just because Fluffy likes to crunch on some Cheerios now and then doesn’t mean that he doesn’t need to have a meat-based diet.
‘Bless his/her heard’ is often used as an insult in the South. A Southern lady would not want to say anything unkind, lest she be seen as an unkind person. So it’s like code for ‘I agree she’s stupid, but her heart is in the right place – misguided though she is.’
I don’t see any problems with feeding a cat a vegetarian diet.
I mean, cats are little bitty things… and a vegetarian is a full-sized human. Heck, the cat probably wouldn’t need more than one or two of 'em a year, if they’re properly butchered, portioned out, and frozen until needed.
I’d suggest starting with the colleague.
Holy fucking shit. For all the evil and stupid things PETA has done this one takes the cake.
I interpreted this the same way, however I find the implication that her “heart is in the right place” to be dead wrong and ignorant. This fallacy that vegetarianism is somehow evidence of being a good person needs to end. It’s the equivalent of me not liking sushi and being lauded for it.
Bulgarians wear fur hats in old WW2 photos? I’ve…never seen that, tbh.
Anyway, Max doesn’t need a fut hat. He has a fur HEAD.
In certain circumstances, with the proper delivery, it can be code for “Fuck her heart with a chainsaw”.
