I love Missoula, Montana. Passed through several years ago when my wife and daughter were biking from the Pacific Coast to the Black Hills, and I was driving behind with two miniature poodles. We stayed in a lousy hotel but had a terrific dinner. Also, it was the home of James Crumley, the late great private eye novelist, whose last three books I edited. ---

THE LAST GOOD KISS (1978) is considered his best work, and one of the greatest P.I. Novels of the late 20th century. I’m a live and let live kind of atheist. While I occasionally will try to impart a bit of wisdom if I think it will do any good, I do know that when my wisdom is unwanted, it will have the opposite affect of what was intended. Part of this comes from having a grandfather who was also an atheist, but also liked to wear tefillin because it made him feel good to do so. Who am I to question the very stuff that helps someone else manage to get through life? But yeah, when its used in a hostile way, to advertise superiority or to infringe on other people’s rights, then I’m going to push back. I have never had any problems with people’s celebrations of Ramadan (and I do know some people who do celebrate it – I may be an atheist but I do have friends who aren’t). That said, I do try to stay out of the shopping malls during the month and a half prior to Christmas because I don’t like the hostility and tensions that far too often radiates from people doing Christmas shopping. Let them have their early heart attacks. I’m staying far away from that. ---

Look, it’s hard to coordinate attacks on a holy month that moves around relative to the civil year.
