In the store I cashier at, the first time you do that you are dismissed for the day. The second time, you lose a week of work. The third time, you are fired.

But as for customers on their devices: What is so important that it can’t wait for five minutes?

It makes me crazy when I’m sitting behind someone at an event and they have their tablet held up in the air to record it. Just because they want to view said event through their screen doesn’t mean I want to.

Put your phone on a selfie stick and hold it out in front of theirs.

And it is even worse when they’re in a subway station or on a train. Look, I think rap music sounds awful under normal circumstances, but nothing is going to sound good from a loud phone speaker and the sound is bouncing off the walls and ceilings of a narrow subway station or on a train.

My random complaint of the day, however, has nothing to do with phones. I am so sick of all the phishing emails. Unfortunately, I do have to pay attention to the ones from ‘Apple’ and others since I actually did have to change a credit card number and I have so many subscriptions on auto pay that are legitimately getting declined.

If you use Google email, it filters these out with close to perfect accuracy.

What I find equally problematic is the large number of _genuine_ customer emails that follow the phishing format: follow this handy link, and provide some key personal details. Likewise, genuine calls where someone you don’t know from the company _calls you_ and then ask _you_ to provide key personal information to identify yourself. These are the idiotic procedures that _enable_ phishing.

I don’t know the proper name for them, but there are these little free newspapers. OK, free, what should I expect… but one of them here apparently had a bit of a makeover recently, and I hadn’t looked in one since then until today. Every right-hand page is now 100% advertising. All of them. And the formerly very limited content is now nearly nonexistent - the sports section was a picture of LeBron James with one sentence about him, plus there was one other short comment about something else. That was it.

Newsprint must be cheap, when you can publish a paper for free with basically nothing in it.

IDK if they still do this, but a few years ago, Hy-Vee, a Midwestern grocery chain, had a zero tolerance policy for this. Using a cell phone while working was a firing offense the FIRST time. Good for them. They said, “If someone needs to reach you that badly, they can contact you through the switchboard.”

Most businesses don’t allow employees to have their phone out. I am not sure how young people handle it. These kids think it’s obscene not to have a phone and use it constantly. I really hate the damn things. I never liked land lines a whole lot. I realize they are necessary, but jeez what a pain in the ass.

Most of the cashiers I’ve seen who are on their phones are in small businesses where they own the place, or are one of just a few employees. Doesn’t make it less rude though.

I refuse to get out of the way of people who are walking while on their cell. I happily give the right of way to those who have trouble walking, are elderly, or in wheelchairs (I work in a hospital). But those who are yamming and not looking? No courtesy for you. I keep my phone on my desk for emergency calls or texts.

Summertime in Nebraska, it’s hot, it’s humid, it smells like a stockyard. This is not a new condition and I’ve heard it before. Get used to it, get out or tell someone who cares without wasting my time.

It’s the high-tech equivalent of waiting until the cashier is done ringing up your groceries before you start digging around in your giant purse to get the checkbook out.

My gripe is similar to the OP’s - there seems to be a trend now with people walking around having cell phone conversations on speakerphone, holding their phone out horizontally in front of their face instead of holding it up against their head like an actual phone.

My workplace? You can’t even have your phone on you. Has to be kept in your locker / lunchroom.

That is OK as long as it’s a business call, or they keep the personal call very brief.

My random, non-technology complaint:

In the hospital for a colonoscopy. I have had a very limited liquid diet for 2 days, and after draining my body, I haven’t had anything to eat or drink for 8 hours. And you want me to pee in a cup and you want to dig around in my arm looking for a vein?:smack:

This was Wednesday. The bruise on my arm from the terrible attempt to find a vein horrified a friend at church this morning.

At least that way they can see where they’re going and not run over someone. Still looks stupid though. Give me an earpiece for when I have to walk and talk any time.

OK, I call an “unclear on the concept” penalty here.

It’s the advertising that pays for the newsprint. It is precisely because newsprint is more expensive that they have to have more advertising. They would probably like to have more content, but they can’t afford it. And one big photo of LeBron will bring in a lot more “readers” (that’s anyone who picks up the paper) than a long thoughtful story about racism in sports or something. Number of “readers” is how they can persuade advertisers to pay for the privilege of advertising. That’s how media in general work, unless they are paid by full subscriptions or voluntary donations.

**CelticKnot** : my complaint exactly. I don’t have easy veins at the best of times. Dehydrate me for 4 hours and you’re (or rather I’m) completely SOL. Last time they finally found a spot around my ankle.

My random complaint of the day, which isn’t going to get much sympathy here I can tell, is that my Facebook feed isn’t working. I get nothing; I have tried everything (even made a thread about it). I don’t spend all day on the thing, I usually check it once a day to keep up with friends far away. This is the one social medium that makes a certain amount of sense to me, and now I hate it. At least until it gets fixed.
