Random compliments from strangers that brighten your day

I’ve been learning to juggle clubs lately. My coordination is naturally pretty crap, so it’s very slow going, and yesterday was the first time I just took them down to the park to practice rather than being in private. It was a sunny public holiday in the student area of the city so the place was heaving with hippies- there were at least 3 other people juggling in there, and all the others were better than me.

After a bit, I realised two little girls, maybe 8 years old, were watching me intently as I was flailing around throwing stuff in random directions. I finally managed to get about 12 catches in a row before dropping one, and one of the girls came over, looked at me really seriously and said: ‘That was very good’.
Then they walked off

Too be honest her smile is setting them up for the win.

On my 30th birthday I treated myself to a new tattoo and a day in downtown Toronto. I was walking past Old City Hall when this random old scruffy homeless guy with a big long beard said to me “Smile! It’s a beautiful day!” I said “It’s my birthday!” and he said “Well haaappy birthday young lady! And how old are you today, seventeen?” I just stopped, looked at him, gave the thumbs up and said “And holding!” He goes “Well you have a wonderful day!”

Totally made my day.

This happens? Wow. It must be nice to be hot.

On a couple of occasions, people walking by while I was mowing my yard have complimented my landscaping. I love that!

Last summer, I was taking a riding lesson, and someone I didn’t know stopped on the rail to watch. As I rode past her, she said “You have great hands.”

For a fat, 52 year old woman who had only just started riding again for the first time in 25 years, that was about the best complement I could have ever gotten.

When there are people in a restaurant with well-behaved children, I make it a point to thank them for that.

My brother and I were playing pool at a bar in Las Vegas. A couple came up to us and asked if they could play a game. We said sure and had a seat. The lady spent about 3 minutes racking the balls. My brother, a serious pool player (slop not allowed, etc), told the lady “that is a fine rack.” She said thank you, but you should really be thanking doctor (and she told us his name) because he did the surgery. I about died laughing, because my brother was really talking about her pool skills. It definitely brightened my day.

My perfume gets compliments every day. I did a lot of research to find it (read: went around to every store asking if they sold non-alcoholic perfume). It’s called Angel, and it’s sold at Macy’s, and it’s the only perfume that doesn’t make me sneeze.

I also once was entering a McDonald’s when an elderly man exiting looked into my face and said, “You have beautiful doe eyes.” I was seriously surprised - who expects a compliment at McDonald’s? And barely managed to stammer out a thanks.

I get great compliments all the time when I bike. I am also not skinny, but women are AWESOME - shouting things like “You go girl!” Guys, not so much.

And I get constant compliments on my hair.

OP you do have beautiful eyes and you look very good in your salwar kameez.

I’m very proud of the compliments I’ve received for my well-behaved children.

I used to commute into NYC by bus (ugh). Typically, every seat would get filled, but I was an early stop and usually managed to get a seat by the window. One day an attractive woman sat in the empty aisle seat. After about 20 minutes, she turned to me and said “I’m sorry to bother you, but I just wanted to let you know that you smell really good.”

I was surprised, because (i) I’m not the type of guy that random women tend to compliment out of the blue, (ii) I was probably twice her age, and (iii) I wasn’t wearing anything that would cause me to smell like anything in particular, apart from my deodorant/antiperspirant. So like the debonair playa that I am, I thanked her, blushed, and returned my nose to my book.

But it made my day.

I work in an insurance company call center, and sometimes a customer will compliment me on my tone of voice or thank me for making the process so easy. That means a lot coming from a customer, because it’s a pretty thankless job. One nice compliment can turn an otherwise shitty day much better.

I’m a fat girl, so strangers really don’t take notice of my good qualities in-person. Although once when I was buying a disposable electric cigarette at the gas station, the cashier (an older matronly type) said she was really proud of me for quitting. I glowed a little.

People just look at me walk away.

I do have the occasional man - or woman - tell me that my wife is beautiful, stunning, etc…
It’s kind of nice. She is rather pretty.

Once at a golf course, I was put with a pair of guys since I was by myself. Eventually we exchanged small talk and our names, and one guy asked if I was related to “X”. “He’s my dad. He passed away a while back.” I told him.

Turns out he worked for Dad for years, and had so many nice things to say about him throughout the afternoon, my eyes were watery and I couldn’t hit a ball straight all day!

Yeah, that’s the ticket!

My mom was well-known world-wide in her industry for years, and when people would find out who I was, they’d go on and on about how wonderful she was. At the time I would just roll my eyes to myself and think, “yeah, you don’t know the real Her.”, but I was just a kid.

In time I’ve come to realize - too late, of course - how my parents were perceived by the world, and how they affected people in such a positive manner and left a memorable legacy, even if only for a few years.

I come from good stock, so perhaps one day I won’t feel like Quasimodo. I’m nice to old folks, but not children, so I have a ways to go!

I have a purple cap with a Frankfurt Galaxy logo on it. Every time I wear it, some complete stranger will tell me how cool it is. And often people offer to buy it.

As I’ve mentioned elsewhere, I loves me some geeky t-shirts. Obscurity level ranges (no one will fail to understand the Tyrion Lannister “(P)IMP” shirt; the “Game of Musical Thrones” takes some thinkin’). I always dig it when someone compliments a shirt.

Anyway, perhaps my most obscure shirt features the logo of the “Night Watch” from the Russian film of the same name. It’s a stenciled stylized lightbulb, with the word “GORSVET” below in cyrillic. (The Watch’s cover was as the Moscow City Light Company; clever, if you know anything about the mythos.) Anyway, I was at the Met on Saturday, and one of the guards, a Russian dude complimented me on it. I was quite pleased.

That’d be nice, but even at my best I was only above average, never hot looking. I think it was more that some women enjoy knowing people find them attractive enough to make an effort.

Thank you for starting this thread. It is refreshing to hear of beautiful compliments from strangers on this thread. Thanks Meagan! I hope this compliment from this stranger brightens your day. Saludos, harmonicamoon.

Shukriya, dost

It did, thank you! I always try to say atleast one meaningful nice thing to someone every day. I know how good it makes me feel to be noticed, and it feels even better to be able to give that feeling to someone else. I love hearing these stories! It really reminds you of the good in people

The kids I’ve taught have been brutally honest sometimes (“you look sweaty!” “You’re mean!”), as kids can be, so I like their honest compliments. “You’re pretty,” “you’re a good singer,” or just a spoken/shouted/sung greeting and a hug in the hallways make me smile!

I was sitting in a restaurant and the young waitress complimented me on my bracelet. It was a rather expensive one with enameled metal songbirds, crystal acorns and such, like a charm bracelet. She said she was studying ornithology in school. I was pleased someone noticed my nice jewelry and wished her luck in any future career she might have in the bird biz.

I was at an event the a few years ago with a friend, his girlfriend, and his girlfriends’ younger sister. At one point when I was off on my own, another friend came by and asked if I was dating the younger sister. I said “She’s like 20!” (I was almost 40 at the time.) My friend said “And you’re what…30?” I gave her a shocked look, so she re-evaluated it and said “28?”

Best compliment I’ve had in a while…
