I did adjust a couple names like Bruce Sprinsteen was there as himself and as with the E Street Band and Elvis Costello as himself and as with The Attractions etc. If anyone has a problem with how I split it feel free to do your own tally.
I can post the whole list at some point but if I need to go through and do it again it will make it more difficult.
Thanks to those that followed the number dot space convention, it made it easier to tally. I had to go in and adjust those that didn’t and remove lists included in quotes.
David Bowie almost always had a band. The people he played with changed over the years, but they were hugely important. Mick Ronson helped make David Bowie the rock god he is. So when I listed David Bowie, I mean that to include the other musicians he’s played with over the years. He doesn’t count less than Nine Inch Nails or The Fall, other bands with basically one leader and a revolving door of backing musicians, except he uses his own name.
I know you said to just pick whomever you want, but I wanted to point out why it would be justifiable to include David Bowie anyway.
Hmm. Sure, the makeup of his current band was important. But remember he’s the “chameleon of rock.” He changed every time his band changed. He had a completely different lineup for almost every album. Trent Reznor may use different musicians on different tours, but NIN has always been more cohesive.
Again, not good or bad; just, it makes Bowie more of a “solo” artist in this context, IMO.
I’ll have to look all these guys up. This is the first list in this thread that I don’t know a single band (at least by name). Maybe I’ll find someone new that I like. Thanks.
You don’t know who Blur and Avril Lavigne are? I’ve never heard of the other 8 (okay, Josie and the Pussycats, but I thought they were fictional) but Blur and Avril Lavigne are massively successful top-40 types.
Well, Avril Lavigne is, Blur were, until Damon Albarn went off to start Gorillaz instead.
Radiohead
The Smiths
Joy Division
The Cure
Neil Young
The Smithereens
The Chameleons
REM
Psychedelic Furs
Honorable Mention goes to:
CSNY

Massive Attack
New Order
INXS
Brian Eno
Echo and the Bunnymen
Talking Heads
Rage Against the Machine
Cake
Red Hot Chilipeppers
Beatles
Tears for Fears
Clearly I am not in touch with other on this board. No love for Jackson Browne? a little love for AC/DC? and Boston?
scrolling through the list, I can see many other favorites (Talking Heads), and some that I don’t like at all, (which I won’t list). I am glad to see mention of *Uriah Heep *and the Dead Kennedys. And I relieved to see that The Vapors have not been mentioned.
Yah, I mostly just posted that list to shake things up, but they are all fairly well-known, and I DO like all of them. I would def look some of them up – they’re not all going to appeal to every taste, but I bet almost everyone would find at least one they like in it.
