Yes, they build them to not blow up (a very very good thing), but clearly even when the pressure vessel remains, it’s a true disaster when things go wrong. It’s impossible to imagine how bad it would get if one of the fuel ponds collapses, or burns. ---

This is because the spent fuel pond contains so much more material, and it’s almost all the really bad kind. Reactor three, with it’s high plutonium fuel, is a magnitude worse to have an accident with. And of course it’s the one that blew the hell up, and to this day is a steaming pile of rubble, releasing radiation into the atmosphere at will. ---
