To paraphrase the great Cecil, if we’re talking about the prices of bananas in China, I don’t care about the temperature of spit in Sumatra.

Unless you are going to tell me that DOJ and DHS are saying there are illegals coming in, when in fact there are none, then I don’t see how your comment is relevant. Is there evidence that the numbers are far off what they are reporting? If so, I would like to see a cite.

LOL, DHS is shut down, the people currently working, unpaid. Don’t you remember?

What good are they doing with 90% of their workforce soon to be looking for new jobs? How many cops do you know who can go unpaid for “months” or “years”, the amount of time Trump said he will shut down the government?

But, yeah, go ahead and argue “DHS” [all you want](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Zd9muK2M36c).

You seem to be trying to change the subject.

You suggested that DHS and DOJ were drastically falsely reporting the illegals situation, when you presented your false dichotomy (honest gov/no borders vs dishonest government/border security).

Is there evidence of that?

> Unless you’re talking about them renting a room from you, I’m pretty sure you mean border security.
>
> As for how the wall makes us less safe - please expand on that. A wall, fence, or barrier has been down on the TJ border for years, and that’s what forces people to make dangerous trips through the AZ desert, where there is no wall (or water, or much medical attention in case something goes wrong, as we saw a week or two ago when those kids died).
>
> Five billion may sound like a lot of money, but it’s a drop in the bucket for the Feds. And walls/fences do work - as on RCP this morning, “robust fencing made an enormous difference in stopping illegal crossings in Yuma, Ariz. The area had only about 5 miles of fencing in the mid-2000s, then saw the extent of its fencing increase 10-fold. Illegal crossings plummeted.”
>
> Are there other things we can do? Absolutely. Overstayed visa enforcement, mandatory eVerify are places I would also address. But just because one solution doesn’t solve 100% of the problem, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t do it.

1. Yes. Border.
2. So, _50 miles of fencing_ caused illegal crossings to plummet, but Trump needs a 40 foot wall?

Does anyone other than Trump think we need a wall? Especially if Mexico is _reluctant_ to pay for it? [Apparently not](https://www.forbes.com/sites/stuartanderson/2019/01/04/where-the-idea-for-donald-trumps-wall-came-from/#3a851b594415):

> [@](#):

> Donald Trump’s plan to build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border did not come from security analysts following years of study or through evidence that a wall would reduce illegal immigration. Amazingly, for something so central to the current U.S. president, the wall came about as a “mnemonic device” thought up by a pair of political consultants to remind Donald Trump to talk about illegal immigration.

Regardless of where Trump got the idea, it’s pretty clear that walls do what they are supposed to do. 100% effective? No, but it definitely helps.

If you are open minded enough to want details, you might find this article of interest.

> **[Borders and Walls: Do Barriers Deter Unauthorized Migration?](https://www.migrationpolicy.org/article/borders-and-walls-do-barriers-deter-unauthorized-migration)**
>
> Over the past several decades, in response to the uptick in spontaneous migration flows, there has been a surge in construction of border walls and fences. This trend begs several questions: Why now? Did border walls work in the past? Do they work...

"Indeed, short sections of walls have also proved effective at decreasing movement across international borders. This was demonstrated in the 1990s on the U.S.-Mexico border when the first sections of fencing were built in El Paso and near San Diego, supported by large deployments of Border Patrol agents. In the weeks that followed, crossings in those sectors dropped to almost zero. Similarly, the construction of Hungary’s border fence in 2015 was backed up with border guards, and consequently, crossings dropped substantially.

However, in both cases fortified walls did not prevent crossings into the United States and European Union entirely, but instead shifted flows to other locations that were more remote or less fortified. In the U.S. case, as high-traffic urban routes were closed, migrants and smugglers began to cross in the remote and dangerous deserts of western Arizona."

So the failures of a wall, when they do occur, is when it isn’t comprehensive. Seems like an argument for more walls, not less.

There are always some illegals coming in, of course. But [as of 2016, there were 1.5 million fewer undocumented immigrants in America than there were in 2007](https://www.nytimes.com/2018/11/27/us/illegal-immigrants-population-study.html). So overall, we don’t have an influx at all; we have an outflux.

ETA: Also, the consensus seems to be that most undocumented immigrants don’t cross the border somewhere in the desert, but enter the country legally, then overstay their visas.
