come on man
99 cents for a movie is a great deal. This is the best time to be a VHS fan. The movies are cheap. The players are cheap. I have two VCRs and a third one built into a TV/VCR combo. You’re missing out on great inexpensive entertainment. And they don’t get scratched up like DVDs. The skips can ruin a DVD experience. Some of my VHS are not new quality anymore, but they are still watchable.

Yeah, but for the one movie you bought actually worth owning (IMHO), you have to switch tapes mid-movie! Argh. Plus, I’d wager the dual-VHS you bought for the Coppola is not letter-boxed, which takes away from the experience significantly–especially since that title already comes dirt cheap on DVD anyway.

Pan & scan ruins the VHS experience. Lower quality video ruins hte VHS experience. VCRs are not cheap, they only come attached to DVD players for ~$100. Not a single movie released in the last five years is available on VHS.

I don’t like Pan & Scan but I don’t think it ruins the experience. Yes I know how much widescreen is better and I always prefer widescreen, but I don’t let fullscreen ruin the experience for me. It doesn’t even matter on a movie like Jingle All the Way. And it is worth it for the cheapness of the product. I bought a VCR at the flea market last year for $4. If I want a movie released in the past 5 years, I can get it on DVD but I can think of few movies released in the last 5 years I even want to buy.

I sell VHS tapes at the local flea market for $1 a pop and they go like hotcakes. A lot of people still have working players, and if you just want a bunch of lowbrow comedies or action flicks (ie, something that doesn’t have to be in widescreen to still be enjoyable), you can’t beat the price.

\*\*PSXer \*\*- Out of curiosity, are you a hipster? I know I know, hipsters hate to be called hipsters. Do you ride a bike with a satchel and a bad hair cut and do things ironically? That’s the only explanation I can think of for your love of 80s movies, Laserdiscs, and VHS tapes. Do you like LCD Soundsystem?
Back on topic, terrible purchases except for maybe the DVDs since they’ll still look pretty good on a current player and the price wasn’t bad. You could have probably found them for less though.

I have never found laserdiscs except 1) on eBay 2) at the big flea market in Raleigh. Little shops around here never have them alas

What are you watching these VHS tapes on? A CRT TV? I can’t imagine trying to watch VHS on a plasma or LCD screen. Why do you like watching such low-res video?

I don’t have any of those fancy LCD or Plasma TVs I am not made of money. I have a 27" CRT and the 13" VCR/TV (CRT of course) combo I use mainly.
CRTs are the best anyway because you can’t play Duck Hunt on those fancy TVs.
I am not going to buy a better TV because I don’t have anything HD so what is the point.
I don’t have anything HD because I don’t have a TV for them. I just now got a decent DVD collection to replace my VHS and now they want me to move to Blu Ray? I can’t be re-buying my movie collection every five years

If you’re going to buy videotapes, you’re pretty much stuck with eighties movies.
As for the movies in the OP, I’d go for four out of five. Pass on _Jingle All the Way_.
