I’ve heard a theory that the best security scheme is to have a small safe, marginally transportable, secured in place but not too well. In it you have some valuables and cash, but nothing much (in AM’s case, say, $20K worth). The real valuables are kept in a hidden location.
Burglars will naturally focus on the safe, pry it loose and carry it off to be opened later. They will probably not look for another stash.
They’re also big enough and noisy enough (with loose change inside) that you can’t just quickly grab one and slip it into a pocket, the way you could a handful of loose bills. And if you do hide one away but someone catches you, it’s going to have a name and address in it so you can’t claim that it’s actually yours, the way you could with raw cash.
Is it so hard to have a nearby safety deposit box in a bank? Mine’s free, and I don’t have any bling at all, but if I did, that’s where it would live. You know when you need it and when you don’t.
I have one for in person vending that I occasionally do and I never let it leave my sight except when someone I trust spells me for a bathroom break. On multi-day events when the location is locked up, I’ll leave my merchandise displays in place but bring my cashbox with me back to my hotel room.
Also, in between events, I don’t leave more than around $100 in the box.
(Sometimes people think fast food jobs don’t teach you much more than punctuality, but I picked up a few mad skillz from mine: proper cash handling, and food hygiene are two important ones.)
