> If American Christians actually believed half the stuff they preach, they would be the most carefree people on the planet. Indeed, many of them were just a couple of years ago. But something has changed between now and then. I wonder what that thing was.

I think your memory is seriously distorted here, and I think it comes from trying to equate two very different groups of Christians.

Some Christians have been predicting the Apocalypse since Jesus was preaching. In fact, according to the Gospels, Jesus himself preached that the end of the world would come _before some of the people hearing him had tasted death._ That means it was long overdue by the time the New Testament was actually written, decades after the crucifixion and, as I understand it, after the last of the original disciples had died. In vaguely more recent times, Europe had a massive upswing of Millennial Apocalyptic Hysteria (MAH) around 1000, as the religion has always been big on huge round numbers. When this didn’t happen, new dates were chosen right up through the 1800s, 1900s, and, of course, 2000 was going to be It for the MAH crowd. MAH is just something that periodically happens and then dies away for a while in Christian populations.

There are, of course, happy, perky Christians of the “Live and Let God”/“Our God is an Awesome God” variety. Based on very little, I’ll date the modern version of this to the 1970s Jesus Freak Revival when a number of the hippies decided to bring that long-haired pinko Jew Jesus back to his countercultural roots. They were the ones behind “Jesus Christ, Superstar” and Christian Rock to this day, seriously pissing off people like Jimmy Swaggart and thus earning their place in civil society. I’ve never associated them with MAH, but I could be wrong.

Clearly, you are not paying attention. This is junior high. By definition,\* nobody \*fits in. Right now, you remind me of the 8th grade girls whose present catchphrase is to sneer “you’re so childish!” at anybody they disagree with or don’t like.
If this were GD, you might possibly have some leg to stand on with this apparent effort to catch me in some logical contradiction of my own position, but it isn’t. This is The Pit, which is not only Junior High, but Junior High during lunch period when the teachers are too busy chatting with each other and thinking about sneaking out for a smoke to give a fuck what anybody does or says as long as there is no outright violence.

Fear. Fear that the country is changing into something that no longer automatically puts white christians at the top of everything. Fear makes people do and say things they ordinarily wouldn’t.

Instead of being able to be flexible about changes, some people react with fear and dread.

Someone gave me a link once to a paper written about this kind of personality. It might have been Marley.

If you’re going down that road, I have to link to [“The Paranoid Style in American Politics”](http://karws.gso.uri.edu/jfk/conspiracy_theory/the_paranoid_mentality/the_paranoid_style.html), which is the classic article on the subject from November 1964. It wasn’t new even then:

> [@](#):
>
> Here is Senator McCarthy, speaking in June 1951 about the parlous situation of the United States:
>
> ```
> How can we account for our present situation unless we believe that men high in this government are concerting to deliver us to disaster? This must be the product of a great conspiracy on a scale so immense as to dwarf any previous such venture in the history of man. A conspiracy of infamy so black that, which it is finally exposed, its principals shall be forever deserving of the maledictions of all honest men.…What can be made of this unbroken series of decisions and acts contributing to the strategy of defeat? They cannot be attributed to incompetence.…The laws of probability would dictate that part of…[the] decisions would serve the country’s interest.
>
> ```
>
> Now turn back fifty years to a manifesto signed in 1895 by a number of leaders of the Populist party:
>
> ```
> As early as 1865-66 a conspiracy was entered into between the gold gamblers of Europe and America.…For nearly thirty years these conspirators have kept the people quarreling over less important matters while they have pursued with unrelenting zeal their one central purpose.…Every device of treachery, every resource of statecraft, and every artifice known to the secret cabals of the international gold ring are being used to deal a blow to the prosperity of the people and the financial and commercial independence of the country.
>

>
> Next, a Texas newspaper article of 1855:
>
> ```
> …It is a notorious fact that the Monarchs of Europe and the Pope of Rome are at this very moment plotting our destruction and threatening the extinction of our political, civil, and religious institutions. We have the best reasons for believing that corruption has found its way into our Executive Chamber, and that our Executive head is tainted with the infectious venom of Catholicism.…The Pope has recently sent his ambassador of state to this country on a secret commission, the effect of which is an extraordinary boldness of the Catholic church throughout the United States.…These minions of the Pope are boldly insulting our Senators; reprimanding our Statesmen; propagating the adulterous union of Church and State; abusing with foul calumny all governments but Catholic, and spewing out the bitterest execrations on all Protestantism. The Catholics in the United States receive from abroad more than $200,000 annually for the propagation of their creed. Add to this the vast revenues collected here.…
>
> ```

I personally noticed it ramping up to a violent degree in the 1990s, with a number of bombings and other violent acts on the part of self-proclaimed ‘patriots’, and I wonder whether any of the people currently associating with the Tea Party or Sarah Palin are going to become violent idiots if they find out they won’t always get their way.

Susanna agreed and specified the exact things of the world she was concerned about. The people deciding to debate Susannas concerns rather than adress the topic of the op, they derailed the thread.

Well, if this were any other forum, this would be the time for me to hold my hat in my hand (figuratively speaking; I wasn’t really wearing a hat) and say “You are absolutely right; she got the track-jump started, but then other people came along helping to push the train off the rails”.

However, this is _not_ another forum, this is The Pit, so as such, I am force to shove my theoretical hat up your nose and follow up with a hearty “fuck off”! 😛

In point of fact, **_IF_ Susanann** is the same **Susanann** who formerly posted on another forum I frequent, which does allow avatars, and who espoused points of view very similar to our **Susanann** ’s – and of course there is no proof she is the same person, but it’s a reasonable hypothesis – what she used there was an Ann Coulter avatar.

Am I the only person in the country that doesn’t even **know** any “middle aged housewives”? The only housewives I know are young women with pre-school kids, and I don’t know many of them.

Hopkins is cited as having said it (a) to Governor FDR of New York in 1930 and (b) to a press conference or Congressional committee in 1933. I now suspect from **sam** ’s cite that he was quoting Keynes, who was not yet well known to the public at large.

What I wonder is, when the last drop of oil is really, really gone, if these folks are going to scream that it is all a Leftist Conspiracy. “There’s plenty of oil! Reagan said so!”. I think that even if you had all the expert scientists to explain to them that yes, it’s all run out, they’d refuse to believe it.

It must be a terrible way to live.

Yeah, she seems to have a lot of special opinions. She also came back to that thread to clarify:

> [@Not having children and your outlook on life](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/not-having-children-and-your-outlook-on-life/556075/337):
>
> I still stand by my original statement that for most people life is pointless without kids. On the other hand, I dont mean to imply that most people “\*should \*” have kids. Lots, if not most, parents are so poor or so incompetent or so dishonest or so selfish or so lazy or so dumb that I dont think they should have had kids.
>
> In other words, its “ok” for your life to be pointless and meaningless, esp if you dont know what you are doing.

So, without kids your life is a pointless charade, but don’t bother having kids, because you’d suck at it. Got it.

I’ve got to wonder why she’s so eager to pop out a bunch of kids if she is also 100% sure that their lives are inevitably going to be lived out in a dystopian hellhole. I’ve also got to wonder why she thinks a hundreds of millions of immigrants will still want to come to America when it’s a dystopian hellhole.
