The name was later applied to the new town built outside of Jaffa, which went on to become Tel Aviv-Yafo the second-largest city in Israel. [Zap, North Dakota.](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zap,_ND) Tiny town (231 people) in the western part of the state. Site of the [Zip to Zap,](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Zip_to_Zap) in 1969, in which several THOUSAND college students descended on the town just for the heck of it. Suffice it to say things got ugly in fairly short order, and the national guard was called in to beat some sense into the rabble. ---

In Spain, simulated town names often have the endings “de arriba” (upper) and “de abajo” (lower). There are several such real pairs, including Cerezo de Arriba and Cerezo de Abajo (Upper Cherry Tree and Lower Cherry Tree), and the Monastery of St Millan de la Cogolla, in whose Monasterio de Yuso (Lower Monastery) were written the oldest words in Spanish and Basque that are preserved; they’re on the margins of the same book. Today there is a bit in one of the free newspapers about unusual lastnames and their location: Parado (Unemployed, although it could also mean Standing Still or Standing Up), which exists only in Navarre; Trabajador (Hard Worker), which centers mostly around Seville; Teta and Pene (Tit and Penis), which along with other equally-explicit names can be found in Aragon… The lastname Lobo (lit. Wolf), a favorite of writers, does not exist as a Spanish lastname. Yes, there are people called Lobo, but it’s Galician or Portuguese in origin. “Wolf” is a word which is relatively common as a lastname in different languages, but for some reason it didn’t catch in Spanish; my own WAG is that in Spanish the Latin word separated into Lope (a common firstname in the Middle Ages) and Lobo, and it was the Lope that beget the lastname López as well as becoming a lastname itself. We do have Catalan Llops and Basque Ochoas, to go with the Galician Lobos. ---

When I drive us up to Scotland to visit ‘im indoors’ family, I am always amused by the town called Ecclefechan. No reason, it just makes me laugh. ---

Most of my family is from the Climax, KY area. That might explain why they had so many kids. 😃 Up until my mom’s generation, it wasn’t unusual for a family to have 10+ children: my grandpa was in the last bunch of that, as he was #2 out of 10 kids. Not a single child out of my grandpa’s generation had more than three children: my mom was an only child, as was I. ETA: Climax, KY is near Wildie and Randy. 😃 ---

Sports fans may have heard of the microscopic town of Joe, Montana. All 22 residents decided to rename the town of Ismay to Joe as a publicity gimmick back in 1993. They’ve since reverted back to Ismay, but I’m really not sure why. ---
