Maher is much like Trump in that they both are prone to saying ridiculous and stupid things to get attention and own the libs (Maher however is probably not also demented). Aside from being fixated on attention, Maher has a better chance of attracting MAGAite and other right-leaning off-kilter personalities for his show if they know they have a good chance of finding common ground with him.

Nope. As I keep repeating, apparently to no avail, some of the alleged offenses on Maher’s show are molehills that have been built up by his detractors into mountains higher than Everest. When he talks about vaccines – which is very rarely – I just mentally tune him out because he has no credibility on the issue. There’s a great deal of valuable and interesting information on each one of his shows about influential people, their personalities, and how they think. And, his hateful critics notwithstanding, I think a lot of humour, too.

Different topic. Here’s something about Maher’s infamous dinner with Trump that I had not seen before, and it says a lot about both of them.
I cannot believe how juvenile the Orange Toddler can be. I literally cannot. This is the freaking president of the United States, and he has the mind of a six-year-old. This is part of what this Toddler posted on his site (screen capture from Maher’s show last Friday)
As to claims that Trump and Maher have similar personalities in some way, nope again. This wasn’t something that Maher dwelt on. It was just a very brief picture flashed on the screen for a moment while Maher was talking about something else entirely – the contemptible and dangerous trend of celebrating political violence.
Trump the Orange Toddler was obsessed with putting down Maher. Maher thought it was funny and didn’t give a shit or give it more than a moment’s attention, and focused in that segment on condemning political violence. The kind of violence that the demented Orange Toddler has encouraged and incited many times in many different ways. There’s no equivalence here, not even remotely.

You can’t pin him down to any one particular political philosophy, and he doesn’t really fit standard labels or in an easy box.
But it also doesn’t matter, because the only label that matters in his case is “worthless, loathsome asshole”.
I’d just like to gently point out that I haven’t rushed to Bill Maher’s defense this time. I mean, there are defensible things that could be said – Fox News itself quoted him as saying “He added that while the DSA platform may appear to be making waves throughout the party, most mainstream politicians do not align themselves with the radical left views.”
But there’s a larger point. In the past, Maher cited loony renegade Democratic Congress critters saying things like “abolish the police” and “cancel all mortgages”. I defended this because, well, those loons really did say those things and are on record as saying them.
But Maher is now taking this way too far. The DSA has no formal affiliation with the Democratic Party. They’re trying – but mostly failing – to have any significant influence. What Maher appears to be doing here is creating shit-disturbing controversy to elevate his own visibility and relevance. The problem is that in the minds of many – not just his viewers, but all those who read the news reports about his bloviations – this misinformation seriously undermines the Democratic Party and their electoral prospects.
But he doesn’t give a shit, as long as HBO renews his contract for another year. Plus, he gets to present himself as the Brilliant Analyst who sees things no one else can. There’s a fundamental difference between “extremists in the Democratic Party shouldn’t be saying stupid shit” and “the Democratic Party is being overrun (“colonized”) by radical leftists” and now he’s not sure he could possibly vote for them.
In that respect he’s much like his dinner pal Trump – I’ll happily throw America under the bus if you give me enough money.
Maher is starting to make some serious missteps. I think maybe dementia (or desperation) is catching up with him.
That’s some “it can’t happen here” nonsense. What stops the Democratic Party from being taken over by DSA loons is the vigilance and hard work of liberal Democrats who oppose them. Without their efforts, there is nothing that the DSA types want more than to do to us what the Tea Party did to the Republicans.

A couple of days ago, I saw that Maher had interviewed Billy Joel. Against my better judgement, I thought maybe it would be interesting. About 5 minutes in, Joel was talking about the enormous influence that the Beatles had on him. Maher responded with something to the effect of “well, they wrote good music, but all of their lyrics really sucked.” I turned the interview off.
Not that it rises to the level of most of his political bullshit, but it was a quick reminder of how much of an ass he can be.
Maher just as easily pulls things out of his own ass. Upthread (back in 2025) I even linked to an interview where Maher invents a controversy out of thin air just so he can get angry at imaginary woke kids hating on Lincoln. 100% created by Maher. He has either has no problem lying through his teeth or is not being able to distinguish between lies and reality (which explains his simp of Trump’s WH diner).

FWIW, Bill Maher’s show seems incredibly dull and lacking in both introspection and a global perspective (he’s one of the fools that thinks America IS the entire world). I have watched his show from time to time, usually via links posted on the SD, and have very little on which to compliment him, his producers and the network that allows him global reach.
He sounded like an hysterical old biddie. He had Joe Manchin and his spawn talking about starting a third party, among other things, and when they got to talking about the DSA, whooboy. I generally like Maher, though not nearly as much as I did “back in the day”. I think he’s funny more often than not, but when he’s not he’s an ass. Even still, I always had the sense that he’s an intelligent individual and was kind of surprised to hear him eating up the stoopid lies. “They want to abolish Congress! They want to defund the police! They want the border to be wide open to everyone!” Getting hysterical over the “socialist / communist threat” is the sign of a moron, imo.
Remember, that to hold the attention of an increasingly jaded audience, you’ve got to outdo the competition from podcasts, YouTube, Rumble and social media and continually ramp up the crazy.
And with recent guests like, fuck - Kevin McCarthy? Giving that fuckwit the time of day?
