[QUOTE=Argent Towers] Just as an example of music videos that I hate - I absolutely despise videos that are just endless shots of the damn band. The band should take a backseat to the other visuals in a music video. A big backseat. They should be in the trunk. The best videos are ones that tell a cryptic story with lots of interesting cinematics, not shots of the band rocking out over and over again. [/QUOTE] Well, if you’re looking for a video that tells a cryptic story that puts the band in the backseat, you can’t get much better than _Build God, Then We’ll Talk_ from Panic at the Disco [The video is available here: http :// [youtube.com/watch?v=TFSIm3Zeecg](http://youtube.com/watch?v=TFSIm3Zeecg). Warning: Link contains Pornomime. No actual porno was used in this video, but there’s…miming.] ---

I’m going to suggest [_Let Forever Be_](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Hmpxsk3dHaA) by The Chemical Brothers; the video was directed by Michel Gondry and to this day I still can’t watch it without wondering if my coffee has been spiked. ---

[QUOTE=lobotomyboy63] One of my personal faves: “Right Now” by Van Halen. It’s a lot more thought-provoking than most: ![](https://img.youtube.com/vi/WCkQZOnCN3k/maxresdefault.jpg)https://www.youtube.com/embed/WCkQZOnCN3k?feature=oembed&wmode=opaque [/QUOTE] This is my all-time favorite (of course I haven’t seen videos in years, since MTV and VH1 stopped playing them–except for a few years of CMT videos). Love it!! ---

I thought of another couple that I really like - [Rihanna’s “Umbrella”](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=a4X7eFbP3u4) (she could teach Janet Jackson a few things about making a video that’s more interesting than just a bunch of girls dancing in unison). This video is just a visual treat. The best dancing video of all time is [Kylie Minogue’s “Can’t Get You Out of My Head.”](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5uxjNEESomA) I assume that the choreographer of that video won whatever awards choreographers of videos win. ---

**Talking Heads** [Once In A Lifetime](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYbUCvz1LYE) [Blind](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V8kjVsv1pnU) ---

[QUOTE=TPWombat] **Talking Heads** [Once In A Lifetime](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EYbUCvz1LYE) [/QUOTE] It’s always entertaining coming across a video that Weird Al parodied or mimicked, even if just for a few seconds. ---

Charlotte Hatherley - [Bastardo](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cyIVkEhyNLE) Filmed by Edgar Wright (Hot Fuzz, Shaun of the Dead) who was her boyfriend at the time, it’s based on the UK magazine for girls “Jackie” but you don’t need to be too familiar with it to marvel at it. Ten points if you recognise the cameo appearances. ---

Actually, Charlotte Hatherley has another brilliant music video by Edgar and Oscar Wright, [“Behave”](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MVin_npzHgU). Clearly influenced by the 2000AD comic book story, [Halo Jones](http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Ballad_of_Halo_Jones). ---

[QUOTE=TastesLikeBurning] [Rabbit in the Headlights - Unkle (featuring Thom Yorke)](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z3ClCwcCvdQ) Make sure you watch it all the way through. [/QUOTE] UNKLE has another great one, for [Eye 4 an Eye](http://youtube.com/watch?v=BqZtWzPNEJw) (the song kicks in at 0:54). Gives me chills. ---

Another video with a high “how-did-they-do-that?” factor: [“Four Kicks”](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-cLPAolcnac&feature=related) by Kings of Leon. ---

Another Talking Heads - [Burning Down The House](http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=st1lH8zcIuQ&feature=related) Love the ‘Alternative Heads’ in this video. [Previous page](https://boards.straightdope.com/t/really-good-music-videos/444568.md?page=4)
