About the only possible amelioration comes from the soft guys with the wobbly bits and a consistent program of scolding. Effectiveness varies. Personally, I have come to the conclusion that the world would be a better place if we of the hairy and stinky gender would just butt out and let them run things. Maybe, just maybe, they wouldn’t do a better job, but they could hardly do worse. And on the plus side, it opens up more time for fishing and beer. ---

Speaking up as well in support of Sunny Daze. I don’t post an awful lot but I read tons of threads,yet somehow missed that one. Fwiw (admittedly very little), I too found that pretty offensive. We women have to deal with so much of this shit on a daily basis, it’s just ridiculous in this day and age. Men making these ‘jokes’ don’t seem to realize what it’s like to feel like you’re viewed as an object, something there for a man’s enjoyment. Yes, it’s a lot better than it was thirty, forty years ago but it’s still a very real problem. ---

It would not have occurred to me that female Dopers would have found that sharing joke offensive. I’m long past the days of being surprised about running into sexism on this board - even from guys who believe they’re totes feminist, you guys. Another example is Little Pig’s insistence on calling any woman he disagrees with a ‘gutter slut’ or some similar sexist insult. I regret that I’ll be unable to accommodate your request for a trophy, but I do appreciate the effort and fully support your pitting. There are users that already get it and those that never will. Hopefully you will reach some of those in the middle that had just never really taken the time to consider how others might interpret what they say. ---

Depending on your upbringing and background, it often takes conscious work and reflection not to engage in these behaviors by mindless default. If you’re not trying to do that work, you deserve criticism. But I don’t think it’s really an issue of bad intent, IMHO. ---

I can understand why someone who’s been pleasant, inoffensive, and forgettable would want to be certain, outspoken, and noticed. I really hate the idea that it seems to be a choice between the two, but the older I get, the less I’m prepared to say it’s wrong.
