When I visited the Grand Canyon at the ripe age of 40, I was much more “squee !” about the squirrels or ground hogs or whatever they were that were running around my feet, then about the majestic sight of the Canyon. Some things are just to BIG to take in, you know? Also, you can’t beat interaction. Especially positive interaction. It is easy to interact with a goat, especially if you are holding something the goat thinks is edible. It is hard to interact with the Grand Canyon. Hiking takes too long and photographing it is a poor subsitute. ---

I remember my uncle taking me to London Zoo when I was about 3, but I don’t remember the animals. Instead I remember that he bought me an orange ice lolly. ---

The last time I was in downtown New Orleans, I saw two boys, about 7 or 8, chasing each other through a revolving door at a hotel with an exasperated mother looking on. I guarantee you, twenty years from now when you ask them what they remember about New Orleans, they’ll say that damned revolving door. ---

Lions and gorillas are BIG; goats are on a more equal size to a kid, thus more interesting. We have pictures of my same-age cousin and me driving the goatcart around Barcelona’s zoo at age 3; I’m told we didn’t want to come off it. ---

I remember when I had a tour of the BBC. I got to play with bluescreen technology, saw a rehearsal of Strictly Come Dancing and a live recording of Top of the Pops, and was in the audience for Two Pints of Lage and a Packet of Crisps. My main memory is of a tiny room where they store old props, where there was a dried up old foam head. Kryten from _Red Dwarf’s_ head, to be exact. I was 17, though, so it might be my inherent geekiness that made that memory stick, rather than my childlike innocence 😃 ---

Well, to a kid that age, a goat is just as exotic as a lion. May have been the very first time he saw a goat, just like it was the very first time he’d seen a lion. And being closer and more approachable… My mom likes to share that the first time I was taken to Brookfield Zoo, I’d look at nothing but the chipmunks and the ducks. And, do be honest, now that they’re changing everything (and rightly so) to humane habitats instead of close cages, sometimes the chipmunks and ducks are about the only animals you’re guaranteed to actually see! I discovered recently that all my daughter remembered from various visits to the great cultural centers of Chicago was the train ride. Could have saved myself admission to all those museums and just rode the Red Line all day and she would have the same memory of the event. :rolleyes: But really, that’s kind of awesome! It reminds me that everything, from the train to a toll booth, is new to her, and the world really is an exciting place full of some pretty cool things I don’t even see anymore. That’s exactly what we parents mean when we blather on about how cool it is to have kids and see the world through their eyes. ---

When we went to New York when I was six, we saw all the sights (I know, 'cause I have pictures.) Ellis Island, Central Park, all that. What I remember is that when you’re six and you go up to the top of the Empire State Building (which I do not remember the view from) they pack you in so that you’re face-to-ass with the whole rest of the elevator. “Hey, do you remember when you were little and we went to New York?” “Yeah, everybody’s butt was in my face. We could have had that here in Columbia.” ---

I remember when I went to Disney World as a kid. My sister and cousin (both around 5) had a blast…rolling down a little green hill where we had stopped to get churros. They cried we we made them leave so we could go on the rides. ---

When she was 3 or so, my daughter liked to play with colored drinking straws. She’d have all sorts of dramatic play-adventures with them. It’s not like she didn’t have plenty of dolls. ---
