Watched it last night. It was ok. I liked the creatures - the spiderwoman, the ravenhorse, and the one-eyed brain thing with the human “puppet” in the saloon. ---

What I didn’t like was the cringey dialogue, the “tell don’t show” style of showing the backstory, the “strike a pose and pause for a second every couple moves” style of action, spending 80% of the movie putting a crew together and then NONE of them doing ANYTHING in the climax except for one guy. The worst crime though was simply splitting in two a well known story in such a way that neither part stands on its own. Set up → put crew together → inevitable betrayal → town defense, it has been done plenty of times, it WORKS. There was no reason to mess with that. ---

I’ll watch it though I am not a Zack Snyder fan. If it’s a cheesy but entertaining romp I’ll be pleasantly surprised, based on the trailer I suspect it will be worse than that. I’ll always have time for a space opera based on original IP and it does look they’ve put some effort into the world building (though to that could mean they’ve watched star wars and dune and said “build me one of those”) ---

Yeah the one thing that distracted me throughout this whole movie is what this movie would look like if Disney (Star Wars ) got on board with it. ---

My issue with Zack Snyder is that does doesn’t do “romps.” Even his “fun” movies are only fun because they went so far over the top into seriousness. ---

It’s terrible. Not a single good thing about it. Plot, CGI, dialogue, action scenes, were all trash. 2 or 3 out of 10. ---

Mrs. Solost and I watched it the other night. Hadn’t heard anything about it beforehand. Not far into it, I said, “oh, it’s R-rated Star Wars”. It’s basically “let’s rip off Star Wars, but make it 27.5% darker (literally and figuratively) and edgier; and we’ll make the bad guys 39.8% more Nazi-like”. And weirdly, for an over 2 hour movie that’s merely chapter one of a series, I found the storytelling elements to often transition abruptly and choppily. Just a clumsily told tale. I mean, if you’re going to be derivative to the point of plagiarism, at least do it well. ---

Every aspect was so corny and over-the-top that I basically laughed all the way through. Even the closed captioning was ridiculously pompous: one zapping sound effect was described as (astral energy crepitates). ---

The trailer for part 2 is out, with a release date of April 19, so everyone who couldn’t wait for the conclusion doesn’t have too long to wait. And the good news is, the trailer looks awesome and I feel confident part 2 will correct all the problems with the first movie. Those violin chords at the beginning are blatantly _Firefly_ (to go with all of the other blatant copying). I don’t mind the fact that it is a _Seven Samurai_ trope, there are a number of fhose that I like. Though this doesn’t look to rise to _Battle Beyond the Stars_ quality in characterization and storytelling. ---
