# Recent movie trends you hate

I hate conspiricies. I am tired of movies in which the chief bad guy turns out to have been the boss of the good guy. Related to this is my dislike of movies in which the FBI or the CIA turn out to be the chief villains; enough already, let’s return to those days when the U.S. and its agencies were the good guys.

I agree about CGI battles and scenes. The technology can do wonderful things, and maybe I’m an old fogey, but filmmakers are using it to the point that things become too big and perspective - and the sense of “damn, this is big!” gets lost in the dizziness. I guess Peter Jackson is responsible: as good as the LOTR movies were, he did this several times, and it was worse in King Kong. And the people imitating him are less talented.

It’s not quite fair to blame The Matrix series for that though, since they basically brought the formerly niche technique to the mainstream. That’s like saying, I hate American Pie because the teen sex movie genre is so overdone. When it came out, American Pie reintroduced the genre after a lapse of such films. You would have a good argument against American Pie XII: Vagina Camp and other such follow-ons however.

I didn’t see it yet, but is it possible Stranger Than Fiction is a step in that direction? The previews at least reminded me of The Truman Show, as Jim Carrey transitioned to Serious Actor.

I would fault the followers for copycatting rather than the prototypical example for introducing an idea. Maybe American Pie is not the best example, but I hope you get my point. While the Matrixy effect has been overplayed, it was new and, at least to some, cool when the Matrix first came out.

To be fair, the colour choices in \*\*300 \*\*are to make it look like the comic rather than any other reason. See **Sin City** for more of this.

I can’t stand any Biopics. I just hate them and how if you do one you’re a most likely going to get nominated for some stupid award and might actually win. I mean come on Jamie Foxx, Reece Witherspoon? How am I supposed to forget about the classic films \*\*Bootie Call \*\* and **Legally Blonde Two: Red White and Blonde**?

He was also the lead in Woody Allen’s “Melinda and Melinda”. Farrell is handling his career pretty well doing a balance.

Individually there are some good films, but I’m tired of sports films set during the 50s, 60s and 70s as backdrops for messages about segregation and racism. I can’t think of a particularly bad film in the lot, but the volume of them recently has made me not want to see any of them.

I’ll second that one. In fact, I wish Will Ferrell, Adam Sandler and Rob Schneider will all just go away, and take Ben Stiller with them. I’d like to see a comedy made without one of them, but I think it is against a SAG bylaw or something.

Sequels, especially of movies that weren’t that good in the first place. Of course, I guess I shouldn’t bitch about it, because I don’t go see them. “Home Alone” was an adorable movie, I laughed my ass off. That’s it. Next? But no, there had to be at least two more. I didn’t see 'em. Same thing with “The Santa Claus,” “Back To The Future,” the whole “Exterminator” series (it never got any better, and after the first sequel, I didn’t even care how they finally destroyed the robot!)
There are a few “franchise” series that are worth filling out – “Star Wars,” the oddball hero genre (Superman, Spiderman, Batman, etc.) and the James Bond franchise. But did we really need a second “Shrek” or more than one “Rocky”? I don’t think so.

Oh yeah! The worst two offenders, Ben Stiller and Owen Wilson. Both once showed so much promise as writers and comedic actors. Now they appear in any old POS movie aimed at adolescent males.
In fairness, you’d have to put Ferrell, Wilson, and Stiller in the highest echelon of these actors. They can do a good dramatic role and they’re decent writers. Trouble is they’re lazy and they like to go for the quick buck in their film choices. (Then again, if I was being offered these roles, I might be tempted myself.) Then you have Vince Vaughn and Adam Sandler, who are quite funny, but we don’t have much evidence of their writing, nor of their ability to pull off a non-comedic role. Last you have the bottom feeders - Schneider, David Spade, Jimmy Fallon, Chris Kattan, and their ilk. These fools thought they could parlay sketches into movies and caught a smackdown of reality for their trouble.
There aren’t any non-White counterparts to these guys. Chris Rock would probably be closest. I think Kal Penn is an awesome actor, and he looks like he is going to be great in _Namesake_. Thing is, his funny movies are really funny (though the Van Wilder one looks pretty dumb and _American Pie_-ish).

Semi current trends I hate:
“Street Racin” movies (Redline, Fast & Stoopid, Whatever that Rice Rocket Biker Movie was called, etc) - let’s put 2000 horsepower in my Honda Civic & race in traffic! Yippee!
“Supernatural Magician” movies (Prestige, Illusionist) - We don’t want to tell you how they did the tricks, so we’ll create wormholes & alternate universes & ghosts
“College Kids Travelling & Getting Killed” movies (Hostel, 1000 Corpses, Touristas\

One thing that I’m getting sick of seeing are the mandatory volley of arrows before the big battle begins. The good guys raise their shields and very little damage is done. The only improvements we are seeing are the additions of more and more arrows.

The whole genre, whether there is an anti-racism message or just a poor kids school against the rich kids school message, is way over-done. We’ve had football, basketball, baseball, ice hockey, and recently cheerleading and swimming. Maybe when we hit tiddlywinks and cockfighting Hollywood will give up on these losers.
I think there is one script circulating, and the “writer” does a mass subsitution for character names, school names, and sports related terms.

Yeah we do.
Vaughn’s got it in him, based on **Return To Paradise** , **Clay Pigeons** and **The Cell**.
Sander’s got it in him, based on **Punch-Drunk Love** , **Spanglish** and **Reign O’er Me**.
**Rocky Balboa** was a decent movie. It was nearly as good as the first one and the first one was pretty damned good. Forget the ones in the middle even happened. I and VI would make a good double-feature, and tell the moving story of a two-bit boxer who got lucky, and how he ended up.
And the first 10ish minutes of the recent **Dawn of the Dead** are some of the greatest minutes in horror movie history. The rest doesn’t quite live up to the opening scenes, but it still has Sarah Polley and Sarah Polley is worth a LOT of points in my book.
