Recent SDMB peeves, major and minor

What really annoys me is the intolerance for the very things that make a community a community. A shared background, language, slang, approach to Life, etc. Given their druthers, there are some around here that would make this place a sterile, soul-less wasteland of facts. Piss on that! I rejoyce in all that is over-done on the Dope. Every catch-phrase, every recycled joke, every standard response. They are what makes this place what it is: The Best Board On Earth.

And I think the correct answer is Rio by Duran Duran.

You did make your point cogently; you were rebutted cogently.

Perhaps it’s just me, perhaps I’m just paranoid, but I don’t click on anything without knowing where it is taking me. But you’re right - we can save this for the next pdf thread.

In Soviet Russia, Yakov Smirnov is not funny.

Oh and, people who respond without reading the whole thread.

In Russia, government piles on you!

Some are funny, we think.

As for the OP, I have never had a bad experience in any movie theater, with the exception of some lousy popcorn.
I would love to get mail that isn’t trying to sell me something, so will welcome anyone’s christmas story cards.

a meme is half of a memory

: Golf clap : If you ask me (so what if you didn’t. I’m talking anyway.) some people aren’t happy unless they are bitching about something. Unfortunately the mods have given in to the whiners on a lot of issues. Remember when the sole rule was “don’t be a jerk?” Do we really need 25 stickies, not to mention the unwritten rules?

Not to say that there aren’t problem which need to be bitched about though.

I hate when Dopers with long and memorable usernames change them to something short, like a proper name.

If Left Hand of Dorkness changes his username to Dan, I’m outta here.

Who, me?

Every day, when I’m trying to navigate the boards, this will happen at least once, sometimes several times:

clicks on forum
Computer thinks
thinks
thinks
thinks
thinks
Pop-up window: “The operation timed out while attempting to contact http://boards.straightdope.com.”

Rrrrrrgh! Why??

I take issue with this. Some of the computers at school are set up such that you can’t see the URL of a link. So if I click on a link like this, I can’t necessarily tell it’s a PDF until it opens, crashing the computer.

It’s all “meme meme meme”, isn’t it?

And lissener – I did read this thread in its entirety. I didn’t read all the linked threads in their entirety because – news flash – if you cite an incorrect source, you’re still incorrect. Read Dawkins and then get back to me on what a meme is.

I’d never do that, to be perfectly Frank.

lissener, no, I don’t know of another word that means a non fact repeated frequently enough that it comes to be presumed to be an actual fact"; “an idea whose only support of factuality is that it gets repeated a lot.” I’ll point out that in your previous sentence, you probably didn’t mean that, or else you were being extremely redundant:

“People repeating non facts repeated frequently enough that it comes to be presumed to be an actual fact with no more factual support”? Hmm.

In your previous sentence, “sound bites,” “talking points,” “slogans,” “politicians’ bloviating pronouncements”: all of these would have conveyed your idea more specifically, while eschewing the use of poorly-understood words from a controversial discipline.

Another pet peeve: responding multiple times to the same post. If someone does it rarely, that’s one thing, not so bad. But when the same person does it more than once in a single thread, it suggests to me that they’re not thinking very carefully about what they post. Measure twice, post once. Think, meditate, ruminate on your contribution to the thread, and only when you’ve got a good handle on it should it be posted.

Daniel

This " emoting " of things I see here so much, like makes popcorn and pulls up lawnchair or runs outside to play in snow or crawls under blankets and masturbates furiously onto a crucifix whilst screaming obscenities. And there’s some people who do it in every fucking post. Jesus it’s lame.

wanders in

sees Egad’s post

ponders

You know, you’re absolutely right!

can’t run out to play in the snow; this isn’t Canada, you know

Anything else?

Don’t make a list with bullet points and numbers?

d&r

Oooo. I happen to *like * bullet points, so there. They’re pretty.

My biggest complaint always has, and likely will continue to be, people that respond to any complaint, and pit thread, with the behavior being complained about and think it’s funny.

Egad, thank you for setting up the example with your perfectly valid complaint just a few replies above. And Malacandra, thanks for providing a prime example of the unfunny lame ass douchebag responses I’m referring to.
