My beloved hub recently discovered that he likes to use hair pomade. But he doesn’t like paying a lot for it. His barber got him hooked on the stuff but the barber’s stash costs $10 a pop, which strikes the mr as exorbitant. He just bought some cheap Citré Shine brand stuff at the grocery store, only to discover when he brought it home that it has (gasp!) golden sparklies in it, like mica. Any recommendations for inexpensive, non-smelly (best would be completely unscented) non-sparkly hair pomade? This is not Dippity-Do type gel, not old-fashioned Trés Flores type liquid oil, but the newfangled almost wet-gumpdrop/greasy-Turkish-Delight consistency stuff. It doesn’t dry but rather stays pliable. Salon brands aren’t an option. ---

Not sure if this will be helpful or not, but I was given a tube of Bumble and Bumble Straight, which I use on special occasions. I cannot vouch for the price, as it was a gift. The tube is marked: Smooth, Sleek, Shiny, Silky, and Sexy. Darn. I’ll take three out of five. 😉 ---

Basically we’re looking for something that doesn’t have a _strong_ smell, or at least not a strong girly smell. He wouldn’t mind sandalwood, mint, rosemary; manly stuff like that. It used to be a salon-exclusive brand but they sell it now at places like Target and drugstores: American Crew. You’ve probably seen it around. Their pomade is good and does not make your hair feel greasy when you put it on but I use “Fiber” which is kind of like a clay-ish texture almost but you use very little and it gives a matte look. You said he bought Citre Shine though so I don’t know if he wanted the shiny look. Plus, Fiber doesn’t leave a residue feeling in your hair when you wash that I find pomades do. Fiber is more like a natural look. I can’t say enough good things about it and the best part is that it is cheap now that you can buy it anywhere. $6 and it lasts a couple months; make sure he doesn’t overdo it because it isn’t meant to be used like that. My friend bought the new pomade from the Sauve for Men line and didn’t like it because it has a smell. It is cheap though. Whatever you do, do not buy the “Fiber” wanabe from Matrix called “Dirty Trix”; it is sticky and greasy and has a bad smell. I can’t believe I just wrote all of that. ---

FTR, the bonus of the modern hard-gel style pomades, as compared to the old Trés Flores liquid grease types, is that they tend NOT to come off on your divans, divine or otherwise. I think that’s why he likes 'em. Hey, does anyone remember the name of the stuff the George Clooney character used in _Oh Brother Where Art Thou?_ Dang. Now I’m hijacking my OWN threads even. ---

Don’t know if you can get it in the US, but Brylcreem products are excellent - “reshaping putty” or “styling cream” are the best. They don’t stink at all, though the “original” is a bit minging. ---

I used both Citre Shine and Got2B brands with great success. I’ve since switched back to gel, but I stand by my allegiances. The best part about pomade is when someone comes up and pats you on the head. There’s always that pause, and then the “ewwww” moment. ---

Yet another vote for American Crew. It may seem expensive, but a tub should last a couple of months or longer depending upon hair length. ---

I love Body Shop’s coconut hair creme. It comes in a flat little red tin, and has a light pleasant smell. Last I bought some, it ran about $7 a tin and lasted at least a couple months.
