The Station Agent - wonderful movie about friendship.
for an older thoughtful film with great acting - A Man for All Seasons
and seconding Paths of Glory. If you haven’t seen it, you must.

I’m a little dubious as to the thread tittle and the examples given in the OP. I mean, I like those movies but they don’t strike me as to what the OP is asking for.
Anyway, one of my favorite sleepers of all time is:
A particular good combo for people who like politics and science type stuff.
(When I say science. I mean science. Not sci-fi)
That sounds like a really cool movie. If it ever comes out on DVD I hope somebody remembers to post in this thread, even if it means resurrecting a zombie.
Crimes and Misdemeanors - Woody Allen’s take on Dostoyevsky. Very thought provoking and philosphically daring. Dialogue heavy, but very engrossing and watchable.
Bad Lieutenant - the original with Harvey Keitel, not the Nic Cage remake. A great meditation on morality and redemption.
Unforgiven - you’ve probably already seen it, but if you haven’t, you should. Clint Eastwood’s best movie as either an actor or a director, and a tremendous meditation on the western genre in general.
United 93 - feels like you’re on the plane.
The Social Network - sparkling dialogue, and the central character (whether it’s an accurate portrayal or not) is fascinating.
This looks really interesting, especially since I love physics. I’m downloading now, I’ll let you know what I think.
Please do! I’d love to think I’m not the only person on this planet who loved this movie.
I thoroughly enjoyed it. Favorite character was Sonia. I was pleasantly surprised how well they covered the physics concepts. Was a genuinely thought provoking film, thank you so much for the recommendation!
To add something new to the already good suggestions:
Rashomon - Really high on the thought provoking movie scale.
28 Days Later - One of my favorite thought provoking zombie films.
Children of Men - Another good science fiction movie.
Dead Poets Society - Teacher inspires some students. (If you liked the paper chase, you’ll like this film.)
Any movie by Kubrick, the Coen Brothers, or Tarantino would work.
Ooh–I saw this when I was in high school, went to DC for some UN NGO conference, and Capra presented the movie. I loved it at the time, but I’m afraid I’d loathe it if I saw it now: I remember a lot of anti-science talk that seemed to be based around taking quotes from Newton et al where they appeared to be saying that science would rape mother nature and going, “See? SEE?!”
But I could be remembering wrong.
I strongly second this. Be sure it is the original 1957 version and not the remake.
Henry Fonda, Martin Balsam, Lee J. Cobb, Jack Warden, Jack Klugman, Ed Begley (not Jr), E.G. Marshall, and some of the best actors in the business at the time and at their finest.
I strongly second this one. A quiet gem indeed. Also the first time my wife and I ever noticed David Strathairn.
.
I’ve actually already viewed this film twice. Excellent film!
Inherit the Wind
The Corn is Green
No problem. Glad you liked it.
Also loved Mindwalk. Definitely my favourite film of all time. Have been looking for similar films for months but haven’t found any. Any suggestions?

American History X
I recommend the HBO miniseries, “Angels in America.” It’s six hours, but beautifully done and just amazing.
And anything by John Waters.
Gummo - Bizarre, possibly deep, but definitely begs for explanation. I don’t believe anyone can watch this and not want to discuss it.
The Straight Story - Sometimes slow, but always incredibly moving. The acting and story is fantastic.
