# recommend me a title for my conservative column

Eh, I would suggest not using something so “on the nose” – “Right Stuff,” “The Right Way,” etc.
Let your columns speak for themselves and let your readers decide what your leanings are.
With that in mind, I think you should choose a column name that somehow alludes to the “truth” or something along those lines. Try something like, “Voice of Reason” or “Clear and Simple.”

In most colleges you’ll be fighting a defensive battle, so I’d suggest, “I’m Not Wrong For Being Right”. Or just acknowlege that most readers will be liberal and call it “The Other Point of View”. Any attempt to try establish your opinion is the only possible one (like the suggestions of “The Right Way” or “The Voice of Reason”) is going to alienate people before they even begin reading.

(I sure hope that doesn’t need explanation _L_)

(tho that has the problem of being confused with a certain Apocalyptic novel series)

“Red State Alert”
“Why Aren’t THEIR States Red?”

It depends on what the OP’s goal is. He might be planning on “preaching to the choir” - presenting a hardcore conservative viewpoint that will have the complete agreement of his ten fellow conservatives on campus and will outrage everyone else. In that case, the more confrontational the title the better. But if he’s genuinely trying to convince people he needs to look at his audience, which in this case is going to be predominantly liberal. He needs a softer title to get them in the door first. Then he’ll have to choose topics and present them in a manner that wins converts. Start with ideas that both conservatives and liberals share. Address some of the contradictions and flaws of the more extreme liberal ideas. Point out the advantages of some conservative ideas. Don’t be afraid to admit to mistakes. Seek to persuade not to dictate.

I know you didn’t ask for this advice, but here’s a little more: lean toward P.J. O’Rourke only if you’re **really** good at humor. If you’re just making fun of girls with hairy pits and birkenstocks, that doesn’t count. (Ann Coulter, call your agent.)
I like “Elephant in the Corner” myself. Snappier than “living room,” and the layout person might give you a regular corner of the page.

I think he meant, “everybody thinks his OWN college is incredibly liberal”. It’s one of those selective vision things young Republicans have. Just the mere prescense of people with unabashedly liberal ideas is “incredibly liberal”. It’s the same thing with this board - the jillions of conservatives here always complain about how “incredibly liberal” SDMB is.

I’d just like to point out that the current usage of “Red” and “Blue” states is an artifact of the extra-close 2000 race and the way that the Electoral College and The Red Vs. Blue Map became scorched into the public consciousness. “Blue” states are normally reserved for the incumbent’s party; “red” are for the challenger. So in 2000, GWB was the challenger and owned the “red” states, but this year – _if the media bother to follow the long standing tradition_ – he should be assigned the color blue.
Which lets you wacky leftist socialists have your favorite color back… 😃
