Recommend me new comic book TPBs

Over at Something Awful, they recently posted a bunch of recaptionings of frames from Watchmen.

Several pages of (mostly) funny stuff here. I always suspected Rorschach and Adrian had a little something going on, now I see I was not alone.

“Recaptionings” can’t possibly be a word, but I trust you get my meaning.

Sad to report, Watchmen has failed to captivate me. It’s doubtlessly cerebral, but lacking in the bizarre fun and Victoriana miscellany of Moore’s LOEG. So far, it strikes me as something I’d read because it’s a Very Important Work rather than something I read because it sets my brain on fire. I think I’ll put it aside for a couple of years and try again.

I picked up the first oneshot of David Mack’s Kabuki and loved it. The art and writing aren’t just lovely, they flow together like strips of silk woven into a braid. This series is a keeper.

I’ve been on a recent manga kick, after reading my friend’s Shutterbox. I went out and picked up The Demon Ororon which I’m really enjoying. Mitsume, who ties his sword onto his poor mutilated hand before charging into battle against a demon prince, rock my word. I also purchased #3 of Lone Wolf and Cub because I’d heard good things about the series and it was on sale, but I’m waiting to get #1 & #2 before actually reading it. My friend also lent me her copy of Model, another Tokyopop manga, which is okay but the prevelance of deathlessly beautiful male vampires who look like female supermodels kinda turns me off.

I’d eyed Kurt Busiek’s Marvels a long time ago, as much for the gorgeous Alex Ross paintings as for the writing (which is excellent). I finally managed to get my copy and it blew me away. The part with the little mutant girl hiding in a basement had me sobbing like a broken-hearted school-girl. Oh man, those muties still get to me.

Not if we get to 'em first! <brandishes torch>

Go read Usagi Yojimbo!

GO! NOW! Reeeeaaaaddd! Yes!
