Recommend me some Linux games if you please

Oh yeah, thanks for the tips all - I’d love to get Alpha Centauri, but don’t know where from (why’d Loki have to go bust just when I came to Linux? Doh!).

I’m also looking into getting WineX - its not free though, right?

I love Alpha!
Try The discount bins at your local computer stores and online. You might get lucky

There are two versions of WineX. There’s the free version without the parts they licenced from other people and there’s the pay version with the licenced parts. I’ve never payed for the full version so I don’t know what the real difference is but a quick trip to their web site should tell you.

The biggest difference is in the handling of copy protection. Lots of games have copy protection schemes that depend on the program being able to play funny games with the CDROM drive - and that’s a kind of no-no under Linux.

I use Winex to run games for my kids. The Linux market for children’s games is very small under Linux, so I buy cheaper windows games. Cheap, since a lot of the time they’re going to have some copy protection scheme that Winex doesn’t support. One in three is about what I’m running these days. Three games bought, one works.

Try www.flightgear.org
They are doing a freeware/open source (GNU) flight simulation game that runs on all platforms (Windows/Mac/Linux/Unix/etc).
The game itself is only a 20 MB. download, but scenery mesh for the entire world runs about 6GB. of data.
Peace
