Recommend me some movies I can watch with a 7 year old girl

Or you can wait for the live-action remake, due out in December 2006. http://www.movietome.com/movietome/servlet/MovieMain/movieid-112179// Christopher Lee as King Haggard! Angela Lansbury as Mommy Fortuna!

Actually, you might have to wait longer – there have been snags and at this point, the film is still in “development,” not yet “pre-production.” You know how that goes. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Unicorn#New_film_development

The historically jarring thing to me about Anastasia was the role of Rasputin. In real history, he never fell out of favor with the Tsar and Tsarina – in fact, he remained a royal favorite after his death! As the Germans were advancing and Russia’s society and economy were crumbling and revolution was brewing, Alexandra wrote many letters to Nicholas II moaning, “If only our Dear Friend [Rasputin] were still here! He could have told us what to do!” Or words to that effect.

The Muppet Movie and The Secret Garden would probably be good choices.

You can also use Movie Mom’s reviews to screen questionable movies for content.

I would suggest The Emperor’s New Groove. Seems to be underappreciated, but it’s wacky and interesting with a plot that’s different than most Disney Movies.

I thought Madagascar and Ice Age were good too.

I thought Ella Enchanted was, well, enchanting. I was forced to watch it as payback for making my girlfriend sit through a zombie movie, and I ended up liking it more than the zombie movie!

seconding the Miyazaki recommendations, and whoever said Princess Mononoke probably isn’t a great idea, I’ll agree. She’d probably just find it mostly boring-- I love Miyazaki, and I did. go for Spirited Away, definitely, and she’d probably love any of the others too (don’t forget Howl’s Moving Castle!).

What about a musical starring a pop star who is so wholesome, she’s like a nun in spandex?

Clip clip clap! Clip clip clap! Clip clip clap! Xanadu!

Agreed. A great movie for kids and adults. (especially the Cat Bus!)

thanks for all the suggestions…we’ve seen a lot of these, including just about every Disney film, both Shreks, Ice Age, Ella Enchanted, Labyrinth, and all of the Muppet Movies. I had forgotten all about the Secret of NIMH and the Neverending Story. I forget how the Secret of NIMH ends though…I seem to remember it not ending well?

Has anyone seen ‘Zathura’ yet? I have a copy of that here that we may watch but I don’t know if it’s going to be any good.

Mrs. Evil Captor reminds me that she recommended My Neighbor Totoro to a friend for her kid, who said her kid just fell in love with it and watched it over and over and over. And I’m not being paid by Miyazaki or any of his minions, or Disney and any of their slaves, to say this!

It ends happilly, but there is some pathos.

Mrs Brisby saves her house and kids. But one of the evil rats kills wise old Nicodemus. However, a heroic rat lieutenant takes over and leads the rats to safety. The crow (Jeremy?) finds happiness with a hypercaffienated crowess.

I knew I remembered someone dying, but it’s been a looooooooong time since I watched the movie (even longer since I read the book).

OOH!

Jacob Two Two

There are two filmed versions. IMO Both are great.

The older one has lower production values, and nobody I recognize.

The second has a higher budget, Gary Busey and a few other people I recognize.

My mother used to show the old film to kids aged 2-6 at the state licensed day care center she owned and operated for 15 years.

She shows the second one to my niece, who has loved it since she could speak.

Back to NIMH

Some scariness- Minor scare (20 seconds tops) when Brisby encounters rat guards in silhouette. Larger scare when she meets the Owl.

Yeah, she can handle the scariness of NIMH I think. I’ve never heard of Jacob Two Two though—is it bearable for me to watch too? I really want some stuff to watch with her that won’t put me to sleep (like those Barbie movies did.)

Jacob Two Two- A boy who says everything twice (nobody ever listens the first time) is sent on an errand to a neighborhood store. He panics and ends up unconscious. He wakes to find himself on trial. He is found guilty and sentenced to children’s prison.

What horrors await him in a prison covered by perpetual clouds, run by the Hooded Fang, his lieutenants Mr Fish and Miss Bird, and guarded by the ooze gang. Can Jacob think of an escape plan? Will the young superheroes, the Child Power Masters, be able to find the hidden prison in time? Or will Jacob end up being fed to the crocodiles?

I’m aware of all of that-I’m a Romanov buff and I majored in history. I’m just saying I liked the cartoon for what it was-complete and utter fiction.

Little girls love Troop Beverly Hills. It is funny and cute and just total fantasy.
The Princess Bride and The Neverending Story may have a few scary bits, hey, they’ll toughen her up, and she’ll probably love them in the long term.

I’m not much of a kids movie buff, but I remember really, really loving Free Willy when I was 7, because the protagonist was 7 too. I mean, the moral and the feel-good good-guy-wins stuff was great, but he was seven just like me! I thought I could walk the earth forever and never again reach such depths of orgasmic awesomeness.

I haven’t seen mentioned yet…Osmosis Jones. An animated feature chiefly about the human immune system, IIRC, voiced by Chris Rock, among other well-knowns. Since it seemed to be largely ignored by the public and the press, I wasn’t expecting much, but found it to be funny, smart and entertaining. I thought at the time that if I ever have kids I’ll be sure to put the DVD in my collection.

Also the usual Spielberg suspects, chiefly Close Encounters… and E.T. You might wait a couple of years before Jaws.

We’ve seen E.T. a billion times…and tried watching Osmosis Jones, but for some reason it didn’t hold her interest. We will be adding Nevernending Story and Secret of NIMH and Princess Bride to our list though–I’ve seen them all and I think she’ll like them. As for “Free Willy”—she’d probably like it but I don’t think I can sit through it again.

Uh, ahh, oooooooooooo. A sparklie! I always wanted a sparklie of my very own!

One of the best movie lines of all time!
