Recommend PS2 games to play with my 13-year-old

SS Freaking X, man!

There’s three games in the series. SSX, SSX Tricky, and SSX3. They’re snowboarding games. You slide down a mountain… which is a LOT more fun than it sounds.

I originally picked up SSX for my PS2 when I first got it, to play with my then 4-year-old son. He didn’t enjoy it that much (although he does now at age 7), but Dangerosa and I have spent more time playing SSX, SSX Tricky and SSX 3 than all other games combined – and since she’s played most of the way through Kingdom Hearts twice, that’s a fair amount of time.

As an added bonus, the games are bestsellers, so they’re available in the Greatest Hits series at a lower price.

The fourth in the series comes out in October, and introduces skiing to the mix. Looks interesting.

These aren’t really 2-player games, but I’ve spent a lot of time with friends playing some of the better adventure/action/puzzle/platformer games, with the best (that I know of) being first Ico, and then Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. These are games that have involving plots and some action, but also require a lot of thinking and deduction. So you could trade off who has the controller, with the other person helping with the thinking.

Apparently I need to look into Katamari Damacy. Though I probably would’ve been more inclined to buy it if they had named it Virtual Sticky Ball.

Does it play at all like Super Monkey Ball?

There’s a SEQUEL?

OMGOMGOMG.

I’ll, um…hang on while I count here…fifth(?) the Katamari series with great vengeance and furious…no, wait…with great enthusiasm, I mean. Best game ever. Haven’t gotten my hands on the sequel yet, but everything I’ve heard and read about it tells me it’s every bit as fun as the original.

Run, don’t walk, to buy these games.

Not like super monkey ball in the slightest.

It’s one of those games you have to play to really understand. Super Monkey Ball is more like the old marble madness, where Katamari Damacy is more like… nothing else I’ve ever played.

Not quite.

I’ve also read that tamashii is also used figuratively in the sense of "the spirit of [something], so the title would be something like “the spirit of a clump.” Deep stuff, man.

In any case, Katamari Damacy and We Love Katamari are great games, and you’ve got to love a brand-new game with an MSRP of only $30.

I really liked Ico and the Myst series, but they’re very much single player. One person would have to be watching while the other plays, which isn’t necessarily bad, but might not be what you’re looking for. Ico is very pretty to watch, though. Low replay value, however.

War of the Monsters is a lot of fun and has good 2-player fighting. It doesn’t require as much twitch as a lot of fighting games (these are 100 foot tall monsters we’re talking about, they don’t move so fast) but it’s really satisfying to knock down an office building and then grab an iron girder out of the rubble and bash your opponent with it. Or throw a gasoline tanker at him.

I’d also recommend Burnout 3: Takedown. It’s my favorite racing game. Having super reflexes helps, but isn’t necessairly required. In some modes, the whole idea is to crash into as much as possible and cause extreme property damage, with bonus points if you can get your car to explode. There’s also split screen racing in which you try to run your opponents off the road. It’s a great game, and fairly safe for your kid to play since he’s not driving yet.

from waaaaaaaaaaaaay back in the ps1 days there was a game called bust a move.
no its not a dance game, it was a simple puzzle game where you shoot colored balls in an attempt to get 3 or more of the same color touching then they explode and well lets just say the multiplayer was fun as hell, very cutthroat in a good way, easy to learn and girls love this game so maybe even mom can get involved.
