VISION adapted from the music of Hildegard von Bingen. Or just any of the recordings of her music, unadapted. She was a medieval Abbess, visionary, mathematician & herbal/crystal “healer”. ---

I think the most important thing here is to disabuse the woman of the idea that classical music is (necessarily) secular. Nobody should be that provincial. These are some awesome suggestions, and thank you all. I meant to clarify that yes, of course there is lots of classical music that would be appropriate. I’m not actually that much of a classical music enthusiast, but was going for what I thought would be a “safe” suggestion for her. I didn’t realize Ben Harper had a new one out, and I love his stuff. Maybe I’ll just make a mix CD of some of the better classical music out there, along with some of the suggested tunes from here. This woman is driving me nuts with her imperious attitude and refusal to “lie” to telemarketers and salespeople by telling them the minister is not available. Yeesh! ---

I would have to say Ollabelle’s self-titled album would work. It’s a jazzy alt-rocky take on classic gospel music. Their rendition of “Elijah Rock” is to die for. I second the Ben Harper/ Blind Boys of Alabama as well. Great album. Alternately, give your coworker a lesson on the background of some classical music. ---

But _Vision_ is Catholic! Aagh! It is a very nice cd, though. Don’t tell her the music was written by a nun. _Personal Jesus_, Depeche Mode, and that Thrill Kill Cult song where they keep saying “Christian zombie vampires” over and over. 😃 South Park’s lampoon sounds accurate, but have you ever thought that much pop music sounds like songs of worship? I’ve noticed that many of the sappier pop love songs could easily be made into (bad) praise choruses by the word substitution they talk about. “You’re wonderful, you’re perfect, you are my utter fulfilment, I long for you” etc. Just a thought. ---
