I don’t know which of them is better, but [amazon.com](http://amazon.com) shows me several translations or adaptations of Cabeza de Vaca’s telling of his adventures, you may want to check them out.

[Genghis Khan and the Making of the Modern World](http://www.amazon.com/Genghis-Khan-Making-Modern-World/dp/0609610627). I could not put this book down. It’s incredible the innovations this guy implemented.

> [In the heart of the sea](http://www.amazon.com/Heart-Sea-Tragedy-Whaleship-Essex/dp/0141001828), a true account of a whaling ship that was attacked and sunk by an angry sperm whale, and the ordeal the survivors went through. Herman Melville wrote Moby Dick based on their story. The book also goes into how much of a superpower Nantucket Island was back in the 19th century. Virtually all whale oil in the world went through Nantucket Island at some point.

I read this one. There is another book about it called _The Loss of the Ship Essex_, which was the account written by a couple of the survivors.
