Granted, it was an episode of the long-running TV show rather than a stage musical, but the Buffy the Vampire Slayer musical episode, “Once More With Feeling,” was a work of sheer mad genius.

Believe it or not, Alex Haley did once have a team interested in making a musical of ROOTS. I don’t know if ultimately he passed or they did, but it’s a shame because Middle Passage was nothing if not singable, and think of the choreography challenge.

I am, very slowly, working on a treatment for this project, and have been for two years. It’s a thing of beauty. Not Yet Authorized, but I really think, when complete, it’s needed as much, or more, now than ever before.
