Todd Rundgren has an impressive list of producing credits. Besides his solo efforts and Utopia albums he produced albums for the New York Dolls, Meatloaf, Grand Funk, Rick Derringer, XTC, Hall & Oates, Badfinger, The Tubes and others.

Here’s Elvis Costello skewering producer Steve Albini for supposedly ruining PJ Harvey’s Rid of Me:

Glad I’m not the only one. When I got it, I thought there was something wrong with the CD. The sound level is all over the place, from barely audible to blaring, for no known reason.

Rubin’s work for Johnny Cash was phenomenal, he got the best recordings of his career, a long career with many great records, out of Cash in the last few years of his life. But my favorite Rick Rubin produced album is “Wildflowers” by Tom Petty.

100% agree. Pretty astonishing for a guy who started out “reducing” the Beastie Boys out of his dorm room.

Ehhh, I gotta disagree with Elvis (wouldn’t be the first time). It’s a great record, sounds awesome, and it has a lot of dynamics. It’s not produced like a pop record, and I doubt PJ Harvey wanted it any other way. She picked him based off his previous work; got the live, raw record she wanted; and still speaks highly of him.

Elvis didn’t like it, but they didn’t make it for him.
