> When we visited, we rented cars, too. At least at that time, renting a car with an automatic transmission was prohibitively expensive (as was renting a large car, as there were six adults on the trip), so we rented two small Opels, with standard transmissions. As disconcerting as it was to be driving on the left side of the road (and on the right side of the car), it was the gearshifting that turned out to be the most difficult adaptation.

I put the car into 2nd gear, when I was trying for 4th, a _lot_. 😃

YMMV though… the only reason I was able to survive is that the gears and pedals were mapped and positioned as normal. If they’d have been flip flopped, I would have been doomed!

I made it a habit of screaming “LEFT!!!” every time I got on the road.

When I went, Enterprise was by far the cheapest rental option. I mean dramatically cheaper.

Almost forgot. Your credit card insurance will not be accepted in Ireland. You will have to buy some sort of insurance through the company. Found out the hard way that’s it’s quite expensive too. Like double what I was expecting for a week. Unless it’s changed in the last two years it’s been that way for awhile now.
