Red dawn in Sydney

“Bullants!”

Doesn’t have the ring, does it?

But high school teams don’t typically have mascots and running around yelling “Under-16 Third XV!” is just starting to get silly.

I’m in the upper floors of a building on Miller Street, North Sydney.

Can’t see the harbour from here, just yellow yuck and the wind is drowning out telephone conversations.

I took pictures of the bright red sky and the dust on my car this morning. Weird!

Hey, a fellow expat in Sydney! Where are you from Gleena? (I was born in Ann Arbor, MI but have lived various places around the world and now here for 4+ yrs)

Hi there, fellow expat Doper posting at work.

I’m from Mississippii originally, lived in Grand Rapids, MI for a lot of years, and Vegas and California. I’ve been here 6 1/2 years now.

Seems like the dust storm has hit Brisbane as well- the races are set to be called off. And I am freezing in Perth.

I used to work there - one of my greatest acts of bastardry ever was that when I was coming out of the station at the corner of Miller and the Pacific Highway I came across a backpacker with a fold-out map of Sydney trying to find out where he was. He stopped me and asked with a mitteleuropean accent:

“Excuse me, how do I get to Brisbane?”

I looked at him, looked up the highway, looked back at him and pointed up the Pacific.

“Stay straight on to the end of the road, mate - you can’t miss it”.

“Thank-you”, he said, refolded his map and started walking.

Nevertheless, I had to race home at lunch - when I got there I found that I’d left two of the windows open. The entire back bedroom, the stairs and the living room are absolutely coated in a fine layer of pink dust. I left footprints as I crossed the room to close them.

The dust seems to be settling out of the air - the streets and cars are coated in pink and I can see definite sky now.

It seems to be clearing up now. I can see blueish sky and sunshine.

Hmm…no blue sky, but much lighter and more white than yellow and I can see the harbour again.

BigNik am I going to hell because I think that’s hilarious?

Did the sailors take warning?

I got the dust and the rain last night. Woke this morning to a thick layer of red mud all over everything.

Our skies now are clear with billowing clouds and hopefully more rain to wash the rest of the ochre mud away.

Hopefully.

Still can’t breathe properly and I’m not game to go outside. What this place needs is a damn good drenching.

I’m in Caloundra, an hour north of Brisbane. At the moment the sky is a wierd grey/yellow/white colour, with very strong gusty winds. There’s apparently also a grass fire in the area, so there’s smoke mixed in with the dust. I’m sitting inside with doors and windows closed, and I can still smell/taste the dust and smoke. It’s all a bit spooky!

It’s worth mentioning that now that the dust clouds have lifted, the concrete of some of the white and beige buildings in the city has taken on a distinctly pinkish hue.

The dust is till thick in the air in Brisbane.

Tip for the wise, avoid taking a deep breath while outside. :smack:

It hit us here in St. Lucia Brisee at about 11. At 10 it was about 70 km outside of town-a bit beyond Ipswich. It was funny how quickly it moved.

I moved here from the former “dustbowl” (north Texas) and so there is nothing novel about this for me. It is quite unpleasant.

We’ve had thunderstorms down here in SA for the last 2 days. Pissing down rain, winds up everywhere, thunder and lightning bad on Monday and a couple of times yesterday.

Rather that than the dust

We usually inherit Adelaide’s weather a couple of days later. I hope the trend contiues.

Expats everywhere!

Headline news here.

Oh well, 37C and clear as a bell up here in Broome.
