The song is called “Red Solo Cup” and the video features a party where everyone is drinking from red plastic cups. All the women look like models. The song is reasonably clever. ---

Send this video overseas. According to YouTube the rest of the world doesn’t believe we drink from red plastic cups all the time. They think it’s just some kind of movie and TV prop, or a kind of joke like 555 telephone numbers, which they understand aren’t real even if they don’t have the same kind of phone numbers. They don’t believe we would write our names on a cup with a Sharpie to tell them apart, that apparently makes it funnier. Don’t they have red plastic cup factories in other countries? ---

I pretty clearly remember the first time I’d heard this song. I was driving in a rural area and it came on one of the few radios stations that wasn’t evangelical preaching. I remember thinking, “Say, I’m not into country music but this is pretty good, catchy, clever and something we can all relate to.” I looked it up when I got home to learn it was already a huge hit. It was probably a year or two after it came out but it just wasn’t something I’d encountered. ---

I went to high school in the early 80’s, in a rural area. We’d throw _pasture parties_ with kegs of beer. All you could drink with the purchase of a red solo cup for $5. ---

In comparison to the red solo cup, they are flimsy and much smaller.
