I was driving home last night listening to the Red Sox game on the radio. They asked the following trivia question but I didn’t hear the answer: What two Red Sox pitchers have thrown perfect games? My guess (and I emphasize the word guess) is Smokey Joe Wood and Babe Ruth. Can anyone help?

The answer is:

1. Cy Young
Not really 2. Ernie Shore.

Shore’s game is not really a perfect game. Here’s what happened:

Babe Ruth started the game for the Red Sox. He walked the first batter. Ruth apparently did not agree with the umpire on the call and punched the umpire. That, of course, got him ejected from the game. In came Shore. The runner was then caught stealing and Shore retired the next 26 batters. For a long time he was credited with a perfect game but it was “derecognized” by the powers-that-be in baseball about 10 years ago. Personally, I agree with them: it’s not a perfect game.

Which Broadway play did the Red Sox owner have financed by the Yankees as part of their sale of Babe Ruth?

Oh, and I’d be remiss if I didn’t say…

**1918!
CURSE OF THE BAMBINO!
BUCKY DENT!
BILL BUCKNER!
WADE BOGGS!
THE ROCKET!**

That’s a great story–I suppose if it happened today, the Babe would be whining through the players’ union about how unfair it was that he was ejected. But that’s for another thread. I agree–that’s not a perfect game. And believe it or not, after I posted, I realized that Cy Young was probably one of the two. Thanks.

The answer is No, No, Nanette. And someday the curse WILL be broken. Perhaps not during my lifetime, but someday…

On another note, NESN had some lameass show on Sunday night called “Fan Attic” or something like that. This chucklehead Sox fan was watching Clemens’ 20 strikeout game from 1986 with Rich Gedman (the Sox catcher that year). At the end of the show, some other guy came out and asked the first guy what he had learned. He answered “I learned that in 1986, Roger Clemens was THE MAN. And now he’s nothin’ but a stinkin’ Yankee.” My sentiments exactly.

You made an error. That should be, “And now he’s nothin’ but a stinkin’ **TWO-TIME DEFENDING WORLD CHAMPION, TEAM OF THE DECADE, FRANCHISE OF THE MILLENNIUM** Yankee.”

Please, get it right! 😃

My bad. I always manage to repress all those titles…
