Don’t forget Peter Cushing. He was paid ~$3600 a day (for two weeks) vs the $750-$1000 a week Ford, Fisher and Hamill made.

Ah! Well placed reference to a ground breaking piece of cinema that came out 50 years prior to Star Wars, in a discussion about the movie 50 years after its release!!

I wonder to what extent the boob ship was a satire on the pop-feminist criticism of sci-fi being filled with “phallic” rocket ships.

I rewatched the original Star Wars movie.

I was extremely distracted that you can’t see Vader, C-3PO, and other characters mouths moving.

I don’t remember noticing that 40 years ago in the theater.

You’re surprised you can’t see the lips on a character wearing a full face mask?

</div>

No, I’m surprised that I didn’t notice it originally in the theater.

Most of the characters in a scene are standing there and these voices are just coming out of no where.

I understand its a limitation of costumes. I’m glad I didn’t really notice it originally.

Also the sets look so cheap in HD.

HD shows that the first movie was on a shoe-string budget.

Those characters don’t have visible mouths. Robots don’t have mouths at all, and neither does Vader’s mask.

Are you similarly distracted if you don’t see the singer’s lips while listening to music from a speaker, or a man’s lips moving when he’s speaking while wearing a breathing mask?

I am also surprised you somehow didn’t notice that Vader _literally doesn’t have a mouth_ until you rewatched it in HD.

I was a teenager when it came out.

I haven’t seen Stars Wars since.

My rewatch was disappointing for many reasons. HD reveals too much.

I watched the sequels in the 80’s in the theater. I don’t remember rewatching them on tv.

I haven’t seen any of the newer movies. I prefer keeping my teenage memories intact.

If an American has managed to go several decades without seeing Vader’s mask or C-3PO’s head, that’s a very impressive avoidance of what I assumed were ubiquitous elements of pop culture!

That’s close to my story, with one uncomfortable change. The old-fashioned thee-ay-ture seats went right up to the bottom edge of the enormous screen.

And we’d barely made the cutoff (the line went way down the block), so we spent two hours looking straight up at… well, we could barely tell.

Moved to the balcony for the next showing so we could figure out what we’d just seen.

Not trying to create a hostile pile on …

I suspect as you’ve gotten older you unconsciously compensate for hearing issues with watching faces more intently.

What did not matter at 17 or 27 matters hugely at 57 or 67.

That’s a good point.

I think most people subconsciously ignore details that can interfere with their enjoyment of a movie. We want to be entertained. That’s why we bought a theater ticket or rented the movie.

It’s harder for me to ignore things like wigs, lipstick on male actors, or bad sets in HD. I try to ignore it because those details don’t matter to me. The distraction takes away from the movie.

Maybe I do focus more on faces as my hearing gets worse. I always keep subtitles turned on.

Having those highly distracting ever-changing words scrawled across the screen would really wreck one’s immersion in the drama. Given your desire to be immersed in the drama, the fact you prefer CCs switched on is a _very_ strong tell for hearing loss.

No attack meant; I can’t watch TV without CC’s myself. Fortunately I watch nearly zero TV in the first place, so incomprehensible dialog matters almost not at all to me. And when I’m watching a sporting event, having the commentators’ yakyak be incomprehensible is an advantage, not a disadvantage. 😁

It sucks getting older. I know hearing aids are in my future. It’s about time to see the audiologist for another hearing test.

I’m debating if I want to watch the Star Wars sequels again.

I remember enjoying Empire Strikes Back in the theater.
