Regarding those Martian "Canals"

So, what were the canals? Did they exist at all? Or simply the eye playing tricks on the brain? I still don’t see how the blue/green regions disappeared.

My WAG, they weren’t all that blue/green except in contrast with the red and in the minds of people seeing expanding and retreating vegetation.
