# Regarding "witnessing" in Great Debates

Well, the famous [pyramids thread](https://boards.straightdope.com/sdmb/showthread.php?t=742823) went on for 2,460 posts before it was finally closed with the comment “Let’s not let this happen again anytime soon”. Do you think that one was “worthwhile”?

What happened there was it got derailed by some kind of pyramid obsessive and then lots of other posters trying to set him straight. Same thing seems to be happening here, with a generous dose of snark being thrown in, but this one was never on the rails to begin with. You can’t judge the merit or even the sanity of a thread based on participation, or else the now-closed pyramids thread should be judged the best thread ever.

I want to be clear that I’m not on some crusade against that thread or that poster, only that we seem to have some strange criteria sometimes for judging acceptability.

For me? No. Others clearly disagree. Seems like a much more interesting discussion than every single “Thread Games” thread.
