That’s a different (and better) assessment than saying he couldn’t be a good man. We don’t know who, if anyone, was harmed by the stupid things he said and thought. It’s entirely possible that that’s outweighed by the charity work he did, even if it was standard for a football player.

White never took back his comments. In fact one of the quotes I posted was a response to people calling him on his hateful comments.

A man who holds these views could be a good man or a great man. But when a man has access to all the information he have on race and sexual orientation and then goes out and spreads hateful information when if he would just take the time to examine his positions he would see that he was clearly full of shit - then no he is not a great man.

Well, iit was only the “great” part that I was objecting to. I do think he showed much capacity for kindness and generosity and I don’t think he was malicious or hateful so much as he was an idiot. I don’t think that he can be excused for his ignorance considering the wealth of information and resources that were available to him. He didn’t WANT to know the facts. He could also be incredibly grandiose. He thought God talked to him. God was always healing his injuries or telling him to play for the Panthers. He couldn’t take a shit without claiming it was a mission from God. What an ass.

I would say so, if his ass was hooked directly up to God!

Gay Wisconsinite checking in, and as much as I’d like to muster up outrage over the Packers’ retiring White’s number, I just can’t. I don’t think the retirement is an endorsement of his racially suspect or anti-gay views, but his talent as a football player and his role in helping the Packers become a power in the NFL again.

He was just another meathead athlete who thought that his being a public figure made him an authority on The Way Things Ought To Be. His dumbass comments were repudiated by those who didn’t share his ignorance and now he’s dead. No one I know spends any time thinking about him and on those rare occasions he crosses my mind I just remember the irony of how Mister Wages of Sin is Death died at age 43.

Do you never tire of coming off like a complete jackass? It’s pointless to point out the racism and homo-hatred of Reggie White unless one also points out the racism and homo-hatred of Louis Farrakhan? I wasn’t aware that when upbraiding someone for being an ignorant fool it was required to list off all the other ignorant fools in the world at the same time.

Like what? All I know about the guy was that he was good at football (which is pretty useless, AFAIC) and that he was an outspoken bigot. What else did he have going for him? What did he do that set him apart from all the other millionaire sports celebrities out there, aside from hating on people that never did him no harm?

He did do a lot of charity work. Way beyond that of the average player. But he also used his charity work to spread his message of hate. I just don’t like how today we hear about his good things (charity) but nothing about what a racist homophobe he was. It was the same thing when he died.

Actually, yeah, I do expect you to do the legwork. Confronted with some pretty vile, bigotted comments by the “Reverend” White, you claim he’s “done more good than harm.” Prove it. Show me why I should show Reggie White any more respect in death than he showed people like me in his life. I mean, you seem to have a pretty healthy dislike of Louis Farrakhan. If I told you that he’d “done more good than harm,” but didn’t offer any examples of that good, would you alter your impression of Farrakhan just because I said you should? Especially when you know there are enough philosophical differences between us to raise some serious questions about what I would consider “good” in the first place?

That’s just a hypothetical, by the way. To my knowledge, Louis Farrakhan has never done a damned bit of good for anybody. But then, to my knowledge, neither has Reggie White. Any who cares is welcome to show me why I’m wrong about either man.

White was an ordained minister for his entire adult life. I think he said a lot of those things because that was what was indoctrinated in him through religion the macho culture of athletics. I’m sure he believed it all too. There’s no excuse for saying hateful things when one’s pulpit is as large as White’s was. It is quite comparable to Farrakhan and Falwell, et al. (His anti-gay remarks came in a speech to the Wisconsin legislature in '98).
Interestingly, he changed his mind on some of those old ideas after a person to whom he donated money for rebuilding a church took that money and ran (and later got busted with a shit-load of coke).
He started learning Hebrew and travelled to Israel to study. He stopped preaching because he felt people weren’t there to listen, but to see him. I found one ESPN columnist’s obit/editorial that claimed he regretted those statements.
So, apparently he was shaken from those robotic beliefs and died before he could complete his personal hajj.

Reggie did a lot of good things and he said some hateful things. Honestly, it balances out. Maybe he wasn’t a great guy all the time but he raised his family and spread his wealth. He proved that he was open to changing his ideas and beliefs.
He was also a fucking terror on the gridiron and definitely deserves to have his number retired (although I think it should’ve been retired by the Eagles…neither here nor there).

So, Go Blue, maybe you could us all a favor and save the vitriol and show some restraint yourself. Maybe you could be the better man/woman here and let it go.
Or, better yet, go to GD and start a debate over whether White’s accomplishments outshine his mistakes and thus merit the honor bestowed upon him. Here you just sound like a whiny feeb.

I never paid much attention to his off-the-field activities, but on the field, I seem to always have remembered him as somewhat of a “cheap-shot” type of defensive guy. At least when he was in Philadelphia. I remember watching a few games and being disgusted by a number of after-the-whistle-was-blown hits and the like. Although it was a long time ago, so I may have mixed him up with somebody else playing for the Eagles.

After all, this was when they were coached by Buddy Ryan, who is, in fact, the devil – and who is commonly associated with coaching his players to take cheap shots and try to knock opposing QBs out of the game with injuries. The “Bounty Bowl” games and such.

All I’ve done in this thread is ask for information, and admit to my own very limited understanding of what he did. I’m sorry that you can’t stand the idea of someone pointing out the flaws in someone you idolize, but the only effect that this guy ever had on my life was uniformly negative: he promoted hatred against gays, and publically insulted them again and again. So, yeah, I’m not a huge fan, and I’m not going to be one any time real soon. Turns out, yeah, he did do a lot more good than bad in his life. That’s great, I respect him for that. But he hated people like me, however much he tried to disguise it with Christian platitudes. I’m not a big enough man to shrug that off. And let’s not kid anyone: neither are you.

Although if it’s true that he recanted his statements on gays before he died, all bets are off. I’d love for that to be true, and it would make his untimely death that much more tragic, as it robbed him of the oportunity to mend some of the damage he’d done in his life.

All I did in this thread was ask for _more information._ Don’t crawl up my ass because your other-wise admirable hero also happened to be a vocal bigot.

Oh, and for the record, Reggie White could have been the evilest piece of shit off the field, and it shouldn’t have any effect on the recognition of his achievments _on_ the field.
