For me the movie was doomed because it showed the wrong part of the human/dragon conflict. {…} You show the military, confident at first, then increasingly desperate as nothing works against the dragons’ numbers. You show cities destroyed, small bands of humans taking to the hills, the whole apocalypse thing.

Compared to what the could have been, it was feeble indeed.

I’ve just finished the last book in the *Song of fire and ice series * **A feast for crows. ** Early in the series there is a discussion about Dragons that I thought was FAR FAR better than the “they eat ash” bit.

The idea is that humans and Dragons are the only 2 animals that need to cook their food before eating it, that there are nutrients unavailable in uncooked food that both species need.

Not great science but better than Reign of fire (really? They eat, as fuel, the chemically inert substance we call ash?)

I, too, enjoyed the film in spite of all its flaws. I suppose I entered the theater expecting fantasy rather than sci-fi, and I was not disappointed. (But then I also enjoyed Dragonheart, for reasons that still elude me.)

Because a dragon with the voice of James Bond is cool as shit and Dina “Starship Toopers” Meyer looks hot as a redheaded peasent wearing a potato sack.

Wow, there were dragons in the movie? For some reason all I can remember is Christian Bale and Matthew McConaughey. I’ll have to watch it again and keep an eye out for the dragons this time.

I kind of liked how they chose an old Norman keep to take refuge from the dragons. As if, that’s (one reason) why the medieval castles were built in the first place!

If anybody really tried to hide out in the ‘mountains of Norfolk’ thay’d be in serious trouble (about as serious trouble as a helicopter ‘hugging the cliffs’ in Essex) - there isn’t a hill in the county higher than 300 feet :wally (there aren’t any cliffs in Essex, either).

Armwave it any way you wanna, but if you’re gonna do a story about dragons taking over the world, show them taking over the world, not 20 years after they took after the world with humanity reduced to a few skulking creatures hiding among the ruins. What you show is clouds of fire-breathing dragons descending on big cities, being met with missiles, tanks, Blackhawk helicopters, F-16s, anti-aircraft guns, 50 caliber machine guns, RPGs, and evneutally, automatic weapons fires and whatnot. It’d be TREMENDOUS. You show the human race exhausing its arsenal against them. You show dragons flying OUT OF nuclear thunderballs. You show the military, confident at first, then increasingly desperate as nothing works against the dragons’ numbers. You show cities destroyed, small bands of humans taking to the hills, the whole apocalypse thing.

Compared to what the could have been, it was feeble indeed.

It’d also take ten times the budget and have everyone bitching about how it was nothing but CGI.

A movie with a world being destroyed by dragons leads to an inevitable… we r victory ending. while this movie provided the subtle quality of character interaction to the kick ass sequences of … matthew mc. being eated by a dragon with a 2 handed axe…

Is there a word for when you read a thread without looking at the user names, and laugh at something somebody posted, then look to see who posted it, and find out you posted it? It was silly the first time, but I’m shallow.

It’s been a long time since I’ve seen it but I do remember liking those actors. I just watched the trailer and it kinda made me want to see the movie again. Those were the days when Matthew McConaughey was billed over Christian Bale. In the trailer. On the IMDB page Bale is billed over McConaughey.

I was also amazed by how short it was - barely 100 minutes. Though I would be hard-pressed to come up with a way to extend the movie without turning it into a complete suck-fest.

I can think of a few scenes they coulda shot with that helicopter pilot…

and, if the dragons eat ash, what do they poop?

That’s just a highlight reel. If you go to their website, you can download a commentary track for the entire movie for a couple bucks. You still need to get a copy of the movie, and get the audio lined up to the video playback, which is tricky, but it’s worth it.
