Well, I didn’t know about the Simpsons connections but I figured it was because of the following. (From the Wikipedia article, which does also mention the Simpsons)

_The “Isotopes” name was deemed appropriate, since New Mexico has a number of well-known scientific and military facilities dealing with nuclear technology, such as Los Alamos National Laboratory, Sandia National Laboratories, and the Waste Isolation Pilot Project (WIPP), as well as the site of the Trinity test._

This only works as a pun if you spell it as “Londonderry Air.” “London Derrières” is a … single entendre.

The Dubliners sing a song called “The Town I Love So Well” that includes the line “There was music there / in the Derry air,” an inadvertent allusion to flatulence which always cracks me up.
