**Kam** , I guess you shouldn’t tell The Bloke that my husband bought a [backhoe](http://www.wirtzrentals.com/backhoe.gif) last year.

Yep, you wave your hand and it turns the thing about 45 degrees. Ok, that thing is actually cool because if you have really messy hands, you don’t get the whole paper towel roll all nasty trying to get one.
If KitchenAid makes it in red, we own it.

> More importantly though, he likes to _buy_ things and I’ve got an allergy to purchasing consumer goods unless they are completely necessary.

You’ve described, uh… maybe 90% of couples, if not more. Even where both are spenders or both are thrifty by general standards, there will be differences about how and when and where to spend the money.

So long as they don’t tell me how to spend mine, I refrain from telling anybody how to spend theirs.

That doesn’t mean I’m going to refrain from remarking here (just to pick an example) that I think my sister in law is an idiot for thinking that a side table for which the store wanted 4000€ was “a deal.” Bro had to put his foot down with that one - the side table they ended up buying was 400€, which is already more than all the furniture in my second bedroom cost. I know there have been some purchases of mine that made _her_ go “eek!”
