Why is it nonsensical to have partial knowledge of something and for the rest of it to be a mystery?
I have partial knowledge of how to use a computer – especially the parts that I like. But most of the computer is a mystery to me. There are people who know a lot more than I do and people who know a lot less. I’m not bothered by either group.
Yes, it is just plain convenient to have knowledge of the parts of the computer that I like to use.
gonzomax, I don’t understand this last response. Why bring up the Rapture and a 6,000 year old earth in this debate if no one here is promoting those beliefs? They may be “part of the religious tapesty,” but then so is Islam.
If Christianity is so diversified that a debate would become a matter of “one on one,” then maybe you might want to reconsider condemning the whole lot of us with one or two posts about beliefs that we can’t relate to anymore than you can.

Please remember that in matters such as the 6,000 year old earth, it is not “atheists vs Christians” or “scientists vs Christians.” It is “evolutionary science vs Christian fundamentalism.” As far as I know, most people in this thread is on the same side. Am I reading this correctly? Are you threatening or challenging Satan to a steel cage death match in the physical world? Or is there some other object of your intentions?
Either way, this is a bit odd.
If you are challenging Satan to a physical fight, you are ignoring all the theology of every Christian group to which you have ever belonged that all state 1) that the fight with Satan is spiritual, not physical, and 2) that the fight is not yours but is Jesus’s.
If you are having a flashback and threatening some human, you are treading the thin line of permitted behavior on the SDMB where we strongly disapprove of declarations of illegal behavior (and threats are illegal in all 50 states, the D of C, and all territories).
The face of our government ,which is pretty much the doctrine we face every day is what I referred to. I do not and did not say all religious folk are in tune. As a matter of fact I have carefully stated that a couple times. But when they run TV stations, radio stations and we have a presidential debate where supposedly intelligent men say they believe in the rapture and not in evolution , it can not be ignored. Please pay attention . I did not say that any specific belief is universal in the American religious landscape. But these nuts are the ones in charge of our country.
That’s an awful lot of territory to cover. I suspect that the more moderate denominations do accept Mormon baptism. I checked on the small Presbyterian denomination that I belong to. It accepts any baptism that is done in the name of the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit.
