NASA is part of the conspiracy, duh!

I presume that satellite is parked at the L1 point, to be able to look down on Earth in permanent sunlight; I’d love to see a time lapse over weeks or months of the Earth rotating and the weather developing from that point of view.

The neat thing about that image is that it’s showing you the so-called _far side_ of the moon fully lit by sunlight.
I’ve seen images of the far side since the Russians first sent one back, and I’ve seen globes and maps of the moon that depict it. But I can’t recall seeing a clear, fully sunlit photograph of the far side of the moon before. It’s very rarely shown in popular imagery.
Here’s one:

> The far side of the Moon is the lunar hemisphere that always faces away from Earth, opposite to the near side, because of synchronous rotation in the Moon's orbit. Compared to the near side, the far side's terrain is rugged, with a multitude of impact craters and relatively few flat and dark lunar maria ("seas"), giving it an appearance closer to other barren places in the Solar System such as Mercury and Callisto. It has one of the largest craters in the Solar System, the South Pole–Aitken bas...

Sigh, you non-scientifical types really get under my skin. If you look closely you will plainly see that, when this happened, the moon was over the middle of the ocean. It then zooms off again. How you gonna stand in the middle of the ocean and grab it? You think a boat will help? Nu huh. Those white, swirly things all over the place are sea monsters. They would eat your boat.

Really, one _should_ critically think these things through.

A dramatic illustration that the Moon is actually not very shiny. We’re used to seeing it all on its own, most often against the backdrop of the dark night sky, and not in front of a shiny blue planet, so we think of it as this brilliant silvery-white object rather than the dark gray world it really is.

I think that can give an idea of how magnificent a full Earth must look as seen from the Moon.

You row out into the middle of the ocean and at high tide you put up a ladder, climb up it and jump down on to the moon!
**Italo Calvino** said so in _The Distance of the Moon_ in his [Cosmicomics](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cosmicomics) collection! Don’t recall sea monsters being mentioned at all.

Pixar? Pthhhbt! There has been no scientifically accurate Pixar movie since “Toy Story”. They’re afraid they may scare the kiddies.
