Fuck fuck fuck fuck. I love my job but I hate my commute. **Two fucking hours** to drive home in traffic tonight. I have had the same damn vision-related headache for over 12 hours and the bright, blurry blinding lights of the highway were just icing on the cake. I can’t see for shit right now. It was bad. It was bad on so many levels.

I went to the eye doctor about my headaches and blurred vision, and he was basically like, ‘‘Yeah, this is your eyes, not the prescription.’’ My pupils are abnormally large which distorts my vision, plus he thinks my medication maybe is causing this. But I can’t stop taking my medication because it’s the only thing in 10 years that has made a dent in the severe, pervasive depression that used to be a regular part of life.

I feel like I’m always being forced to choose between chronic pain and my mental health. They both suck. And goddammit my head hurts.

**bouv** good luck finding that check. That sounds like a bitch.

The girl’d probably throw me out the window for doing that. Might be worth it, though. 🙂

Try sunglasses at all times - experiment until you find a shade that allows you to see but also cuts down on glare. I wore sunglasses from the minute I got up until I went to bed for a month due to a medication side effect. People will give you grief for “going all rock star on them” but if it stops the headaches, who cares? 🆒

Hats are also good. They reduce glare and keep dust from making your glasses dirty.

PSA: Don’t use toilet cleaners, then see that they aren’t working and dump some lime away in the mix. Honestly…don’t do this. And really don’t do this in the barn john. And if you do happen to venture into that den of testerone…open the doors and windows.

I have an issue with my eyes dilating too much when it’s dark, which can make driving at night a real challenge. One thing that has worked for me is creating a small bit of light inside the car (I just leave the glove box hanging open since it has a light inside). It seemed like the light closer to me than just the traffic stuff outside the car caused the pupils to close up a bit…or something. It helped though, might be worth a try. It won’t fix your headache (poor baby) but being able to see better would be one less bummer.

They make yellow tinted glasses just for night driving. They are wonderful. Tag Heuer makes the best, but they are outrageously expensive. Do not wear just any yellow lenses, however.

Question from one of the countries where cheques are almost dead: don’t you have an option to pay vendors by direct deposit? I have the same setup (bill paid by the same subcontractor that does payroll, expenses paid directly by my client) and both things come direct deposit.

That is what EFT/ACH is. My understanding is shaky here (because we don’t do it though I have asked some questions of the bank precisely because I’ve been asked multiple times why we don’t do it) but on my end the processing of payments would look much the same except instead of cutting a cheque my accounting program spits out a report that is verified and then forwarded to the bank who do their thing to transfer the funds to the accounts we have set up.

Payroll on the other hand, since it is done by an outside company, they have all that set up to go and we simply pay them a fee to handle it all in addition to the moneys that get sent out. On my side, since I don’t do payroll, it’s a straight journal entry.

Now, once it is set up and you have everyone’s account numbers etc in the system it should just roll along smooth as butter. Here’s the hiccup.

Getting it set up is a very long process. You have to coordinate IT to get a report from the system you run that the bank can understand and get the bank set up to take that report and forward your money, you have to make sure accounting is in on it so that the correct payments are being processed and they understand how to use it. You have to get account information from ALL your vendors, or you will be simultaneously running cheques anyway (which for some companies.. you probably will), and that’s just the info I know about, who knows what else will need doing to get it set up.

For a smaller company? It just may not be worth the headache to get it rolling. Maybe it will be easier in a few years.

Ghhrsck? The way my brother does it involves a lot of cursing due to different banks wanting things in different columns, but there’s two possible ways:

1. individual processing. Via the bank’s webpage and identical to a bank transfer between two physical persons.
2. mass processing:
a) input details into accounting program,
b) extract details from accounting program,
c) verify whether the format the accounting program spits is directly acceptable by that bank, if not
d) with much cussing and spitting, open report and tweak format, (usually it’s crap such as “must have a blank column up front, and don’t ask me why the fucking multi-colored blazes does this shit need a blank column up front when other banks are perfectly happy to have no blank columns anywhere”)
and when the format is correct
e) upload file via bank’s website.

And yes, there was a transition period during which companies would write cheques and do direct deposit. But it lasted for about as long as it took for people to realize that dd was a lot more convenient.

I’d like to interrupt the all the negativity to congratulate My Governor on his latest honor: [The Worst Candidate of 2012](http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/the-fix/wp/2012/11/19/the-worst-candidate-of-2012/)!

> [@](#):
>
> There was the decidedly odd speech that Perry gave in New Hampshire. There was a series of debate performances in which Perry seemed (at best) thinly-versed on the issues of the day. And then there was Perry’s brain freeze in a November debate in which he simply could not remember the third federal agency he wanted to eliminate — a lock-up that he punctuated with his now-famous “Oops.” (Even these many months later, the Fix stomach churns watching the Perry clip; it has to be among the most awkward moments in the history of politics.)
>
> While it was probably over for Perry before “oops,” it was definitely over for him afterwards. He finished fifth in the Iowa caucuses, sixth (with ONE percent) in the New Hampshire primaries and then dropped out of the race before the South Carolina primary. (In a final coup de grace of bad political judgment, Perry endorsed the presidential candidacy of former House Speaker Newt Gingrich.)
>
> The gap between what was expected of Perry and what he delivered coupled with incredibly high profile of the race in which he chose to flop makes Perry a clear choice for worst candidate of 2012.

His [latest idea](http://www.burntorangereport.com/diary/12943/awesome-rick-perry-lets-federal-government-design-texass-health-insurance-exchange):

> [@](#):
>
> Perry’s office has sent Secretary of Health and Human Services Kathleen Sebelius a letter declaring the state will not set up its own health insurance exchange.
>
> “This is a federally-mandated exchange with rules dictated by Washington,” Perry’s letter said. “It would not be fiscally responsible to put hard-working Texans on the financial hook for an unknown amount of money to operate a system under rules that have not even been written.” Under the Affordable Care Act, that leaves two options: the federal government will partner with Texas to design the exchange or will design it for Texas.
>
> What happened to being “Fed Up!,” conservative? Now that Obamacare is here to stay (did you see what the American people said last Tuesday?), wouldn’t you want Texas to design the exchange? Apparently Rick Perry is more dedicated to rhetorical opposition against the Affordable Care Act than executing his stupid opposition to the law. The complete negative tone of that letter suggests that Texas will also forgo a partnership with the federal government, instead opting to let them set up our insurance exchange.
>
> Awesome. Our federal government will do a much better job of setting up an exchange that actually works for us. Rick Perry’s never-ending administration, aided by the corporatist cretins running the Legislature, have been a complete disaster for Texans’ health care. At 25 percent (6.2 million), our state is home to the highest proportion of uninsured Americans in the country.
>
> If Perry thinks he’s sticking it to the federal government by letting them set up the exchange, he’s wrong. Our exchange will be much stronger for his decision, which will simultaneously show many Texans the benefits of a smart federal government and how stupid our state government was and is for opposing the Affordable Care Act. And what about when Perry and his ilk run for re-election in 2014 on an anti-Obamacare platform, just as the exchange is starting to take effect? There’s a very good chance that’ll increase voter turnout against the Republicans.

So, Go Rick! Seriously–go far, far away…

I heard a commercial on the radio this morning for Buckley’s complete gel tabs. I looked for it online so I could share with you wonderful people but luckily for you it did not seem to be available.

I’m not generally weak stomached, and words don’t usually create a visceral reaction for me but this commercial… shouldn’t be allowed on the radio. I almost drove into the back of another car trying to keep myself from throwing up.

Commercial description:

They begin by talking about mucous and the inflection the actors use caused the first little quiver in my stomach. Then they started talking about the amount of mucous you produce when you have a cold and the sound effects were of mucous sloshing in a beaker. I don’t remember the rest of the commercial because I was focusing on not killing myself or others by tossing my cookies at 120km/hr

I’m a Buckley’s customer. I like their cough syrup but as long as this commercial airs I’m staying away from their products because I don’t think I can see the label without wanting to be sick. Serious backfire Buckley’s.

Is ~4,000 employees considered a smaller company? Also, it’s the largest university in the state with ~10,000 students?

I tried calling today, but no one was answering…my guess is they all took an extra day off for T-Gives. I sent an email, we’ll see what happens from here…

Thanks for the suggestions everyone. I just decided to do away with contacts altogether and go back to glasses (I’ve been wearing contacts since 8th grade, so… weird.) I picked the frames out today at the office, and am getting both the transition lenses and the anti-glare treatment that is supposed to help with night driving and with computer screens (my two biggest issues.) Hopefully that fixes the headache problem.

Notice to all those who wear winter hats (“tuques” as they call them in my neck of the woods) : If the hat is a little too big/long to fit your head, there’s a proper way and an improper way to wear the hat.

The proper way: roll up the edges of the hat, and then it’s the right size to fit your head. Put hat on.

The improper way: just put the hat on over your head without rolling up the edges, so there’s a big piece of hat sticking up at the top, making it look like you’re wearing a giant condom on your head.
