> Complete guide to exploring the tragic shipwreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald on Lake Superior in November 1975. Timeline, theories, ship, crew, song, and more.

\*The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
of the big lake they called “Gitche Gumee.”
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
when the skies of November turn gloomy.
With a load of iron ore twenty-six thousand tons more
than the Edmund Fitzgerald weighed empty,
that good ship and true was a bone to be chewed
when the “Gales of November” came early. \*

A great piece of music? It was like a dirge.

I like Gordon Lightfoot, but that was one of his worst.

The loss of the crew of the vessel was tragic though.

The first time I heard the song I didn’t know it was about a modern day wreck. I thought he was covering an old work of folk music or something. Instead he had composed his own.

Same here Baker. I always thought it was from the 19th century or such.

“Does anyone know where the love of God goes when the waves turn the minutes to hours?” Great lyrics! I also assumed the song was about an old sinking, but then I learned better. There is still great risk for those that go to the seas.

I’m glad I’m not the only one. I was totally astonished when I learned that the Fitz got wrecked in my lifetime!
