“The legend lives on from the Chippewa on down
Of the big lake they called ‘gitche gumee’
The lake, it is said, never gives up her dead
When the skies of November turn gloomy”

Hardly seems that long ago. Lived in Northern Ohio then, not far from Cleveland and I got to see a lot of the big ore ships come to port. Don’t know (in my youth) if I ever saw the “Fitz”, but those boats are part of America’s growth and her loss should be remembered.

Remember, remember, the 10th of November
When the Edmund Fitzgerald sunk;
I know of no reason
that terrible seasion
should ever go unthunk.

Back when that song came out I thought it was fictional, or an old folk song, as I didn’t pay the closest attention to all the lyrics.

When I found out it was a real, and quite recent event(in a National Geographic article) I was surprised.

**Qadgop** normally tolls a bell on the lakeshore every year for the dead on the Fitz.

Missed that, was away that evening.

But I remembered the [Carl D. Bradley](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Carl_D._Bradley) two nights ago. 33 died in that sinking, right across the lake from me, when I was a youngster. 2 miraculously survived it.
