Unless I somehow squished the spider inside the glass, I wouldn’t bother washing it. An easy solution to this would be a [bug vacuum](http://www.hammacher.com/publish/73620.asp?source=google&keyword=bug+vacuum&cm_ven=NewGate&cm_cat=Google&cm_pla=home%20care&cm_ite=bug+vacuum). It seems to kill the offender, but no matter, there is no washing involved. [This one](http://www.sears.com/shc/s/p_10153_12605_05284782000P?vName=Toys%20&%20Games&cName=AllToys&sName=All%20Toys%20&%20Games&psid=FROOGLE01&sid=IDx20070921x00003a) is way cheaper and you can view your prisoner with 5X magnification. Perfect for freaking out the wife. 😃
I have the bug vacuum. You can set it to kill, or not. We have caught bees and released them into the wild. (Spiders get the crisper, however.)

Oh, and if it’s my glass? That sucker is going into the dishwasher for sterilization. What if on its way to the kitchen the spider walked through the cat box?

The glass will never be clean ☹

If you really want to gross her out, drink out of it right after you dispose of the spider.

Having lived in Florida and seen Florida roaches (okay, waterbugs), I don’t want a spider big enough to capture and eat one of those getting spider cooties in my cup.

I don’t understand this cup thingie. Shoes, preferably anyone that doesn’t require me being anywhere near the spider, are fine by me.
I don’t get why you would assume a spider is clean. Bugs bring lots of diseases around with them.
Cite?

And as a preemptory counter-cite, I offer [Doug’s staff report](http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mantsdisease.html)\*, which discusses ants, but I don’t see why spiders should be that different from ants in terms of cleanliness.

\*(In a nutshell, bugs are generally no dirtier than whatever they’ve walked across in the previous two inches, and ants in particular are very clean critters.)

See also [this Doug staff report](http://www.straightdope.com/mailbag/mflyvomit.html), suggesting that flies spread disease by landing in manure and flying from there immediately to the rim of your spider glass.
Oh pleeeeaaase. If you want a little foreplay then wash the damn glass yourself. Standard dinner rules should apply to spiders. You want the glass washed then take out the spider.

Last night I went to pour myself a bourbon. I have pretty poor vision and the kitchen light is dim. As I poured the drink an unspotted spider ran up to the rim of the glass. I carried it to the door and tried to blow the spider off the glass. Naturally it clung on via a web and climbed back up. I wiped the spider gently onto a gardenia flower.

Then I drank the bourbon, spider cooties and all.

Have a dedicated spider glass, specially marked, that your wife never ever drinks from.

Personally, I would probably rinse out the glass simply because it is so easy. If someone filled the spider glass with a beverage and handed it to me without washing it first, however, I wouldn’t care.

There are three kinds of people: those who see the glass as half full, those who see the glass as half empty … and those who remember the glass had a spider in it.
So what you’re saying is that you won’t accommodate your wife’s feelings, because they might be a little irrational? Tell me, how many of your irrational feelings does she have to accommodate?

It doesn’t matter who’s right and who’s wrong. If you don’t wash the glass, you’re being a dick.
No, no, I’m not saying that at all. When I evict a spider in her presence, I DO rise out the glass. I just sorta mumble to where she can’t hear me that I don;t think this is necessary. Oh, yeah, been married a long time, I surely do know how to “go with the flow/don’t make a nuclear war out of trivia” thing.

And you’re right about what she has to put up with. If she was a poster here, you all would probably ban me for assholiness. 🙂

Well, that’s the best answer right there. Make sure there’s always alcohol in everything you drink. Doesn’t just kill spider germs, it kills all sorts of scary germs. Never ingest anything without washing it down with some booze.

I swear, men sometimes.

I love men. I have two living with me. But sometimes you flex your macho muscles at the silliest things.

But look at it the other way- is that the hill _she_ wants to die on? Refusing to even touch a glass a spider was once in, and then giving her husband shit after he very nicely disposed of the spider for _her_.

Of course it is! That probably earns you brownie points, so the more flowers you give randomly, the more you can mutter.

**DrDeth** , surely we can agree that it’s always best to err on the side of cleanliness? True, spiders may be fairly clean compared to other bugs, but it doesn’t hurt anything to clean out the glass, and if it sets the wife’s mind at ease…

I said, go ahead and rinse the glass. But you can’t put this on the male here being irrational. He is being rational, his wife is not.
