There is no record of who has them, and even if there were no ATF agents are going to bust into someones house to try to collect them. At best it may be made illegal to use them, and possibly made illegal to sell them, less helpful would be to make it illegal to manufacture them. But any ban is going to make the price (black market or otherwise) sky rocket, so some people may think its a good investment.

It does seem odd that, after a man goes out and kills dozens, injuring hundreds more, people go out and buy the tools that he used to commit this violence, and people think that’s just great, how american they are being.

After most tragedies like this, we look at ways of preventing the next one, and anyone going out and buying the tools that created the tragedy would be looked at with suspicion. Hell, I got a dirty look for buying a box cutter almost 2 months after 9/11, and I had a completely legitimate need, I had boxes that needed cutting.

But, when it comes to guns, people flock out to buy the tools that that mass murderer used, and not only do the retailers not give any suspicion, they welcome the business. When someone comes in, and says, “Hook me up witht the same guns as Paddock killed all those people with.” the retailer is going to say, “Sure, here’s an AR-15, and this is how you install the bump stock.” The only question the gun retailer will have will be “Cash, check, or charge?”

Unless, of course, you are not really aiming at a specific thing, but rather at a densely packed throng of human beings at a concert. Details, details.

Well, if you miss the person that you were aiming for in a crowd, the bullet just magically disappears, and cannot do any more harm.

Thanks. This is encouraging. I got 6/10 although I would have gotten fewer if I hadn’t spotted the pattern.

I have no quarter for the argument that “people can easily make whatever you ban”. Can people make this stuff at home? Perhaps, but evidence suggests that gun nuts are a bunch of lazy dumbshits who are apparently so intimidated by the idea of making their own gear that they clean out the gun stores at the mere mention of the ban. Paying sky-high shortage prices, I might add. Yeah, these rugged individualists are totally gonna make their own bump stocks.

There was an effort to 3-D print an AR-15 receiver.

I doubt it.

Personally I’m all for banning bump stocks and then refusing to grandfather.

I wouldn’t mind if the Gov made a “limited time offer” to turn them all in for a small reward (to cover the cost) and then make it a felony if you get caught with one after that grace period is over.

I had wondered this about folks who rushed to buy guns after Obama won in 2008, but before Obama took office in 2009. I understand that they felt guns would be harder to buy under Obama, but didn’t it occur to them that if Obama really were that anti-gun, he’d just confiscate their guns after they bought it?

Better to have it and take chances than not have it, I guess.

I wouldn’t mind if anyone found in possession of one after such time was charged with “conspiracy to carry out mass murder” and tossed in prison for life.

But that’s just me. Don’t think it would fly.

My brain tries to assume these people have a modicum of logic to their name, which forces me to assume that their explicit planned intention is to use their new guns to shoot the government officials going to seize them.

It’s not really a pleasant thought.

Nonsense. They could hide their arms just like the noble resistance fighters did in WWII when the Nazis came around the farms and villages – give the invaders an old rusty hunting rifle while secreting all the good stuff in the thatch on the barn. Or better yet, when the jackbooted thugs of ATF come a-knocking, grab their trusty AR-15 with the red dot sight and the bump stock and the supersized magazine and mow those evil suckers down! Then rally all their righteous neighbors and march down to Washington and arrest the traitorous gun-grabbers and string them up! Yaaaarrrggghhhh!!! USA! USA! USA!

Has 3D printing evolved enough to print one that wouldn’t explode the first time it was fired. Been outta the game too long. ☹

When I was being taught to shoot it was with single-shot .22s. The point of the operation was accuracy. I cannot imagine any fun spraying and praying expensive ammunition from a weapon that walks so bad the that hitting the side of a barn is a a chore, unless your joy comes from slaughtering people penned in so aim is unnecessary. Yup, they have 3d-printed guns now that won’t explode until the second or third firing. A bit silly, really, given that the printers needed to accomplish even that cost more than a CRC mill.
