Originally, we thought both kids would automatically have Australian citizenship through my husband and were in the process of getting all the paperwork finalised for our son (our daughter already had her Aussie passport and her US one) when I first posted. We later found out that Aus. didn’t recognize our son as a citizen because he was adopted. He will only be able to apply for Aus. citzenship after residing there for a period of time as opposed to our daughter who simply has Aussie Citizenship because her dad is Australian.
yes, my husband always travels on one passport. Last time we went to Oz, the kids and I had US passports and needed to get visas and he travelled on his Aus. passport. Now, my husband and daughter would both have Aus. passports - not that anyone is able to travel now anyway. I did have a run-in with Aus. customs and immigration and was detained at the airport 20 yrs ago and certainly wouldn’t want anyone to repeat that!
Bumped.
More fallout from the Roe v. Wade reversal.
Anyone have any idea whether he has any alternative citizenship to fall back on, or is this just either (a) blowhard noise, or (b) a really bad idea because intentionally becoming stateless is fantastically stupid?
Words are cheap, but getting settlement status and citizenship in the UK requires actually living there [the majority of the time] for up to five years, plus of course £££. A Brit award should make him automatically eligible for a Global Talent visa (which also lets him travel abroad to perform, bypassing the time restriction), it’s not like the road would be that difficult.
You don’t show a passport when leaving. Certainly not when leaving by car. By plane you show a passport to the desk agent of course. And if you leave by train, which I have a number of times from NY and from Seattle, you go to a special desk set up by AMTRAK, show your Canadian passport and get a special blue card, size of a bookmark (that’s why I am looking at one) that says “Amtrak Canadian Border Crossing Document check complete Please present to Amtrak gate agent” No one ever looks at it again.
Again, when entering the US I use a US passport; when leaving for Canada I use a Canadian passport. Anything else is ridiculous.
Paywalled.
The us tax return for nonresidents is easy enough* if you havent got any us assets or income and dont spend any time there.
(*ok it was written by an obtuse idiot who is outraged and perplexed that anyone would want to leave the usa. But crack it once and its ok)
The foreign income exclusion is quite high and you can offset foreign taxes… if you are rich enough to be double taxed you might even want to move to the USA.
The buggeration is capital gains. In many countries you can easily hit 250k $ threshold for just a few years normal property inflation on a modest property.
Eg in uk, your primary residence is free from capital gains. And so the whole property market and retirement plans etc etc are based around this fact. And the Uncle Sam comes and fucks it up.
I reckon, kids should keep us citizenship.
The time to think about renouncing is if they put down some roots and own property.
Also get your lads russian citizenship renounced asap.
Also regarding passports
U.S. nationals, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country.
So dual citizens can - sometime must - use both passports on a journey
