Exactly. I saluted a lot of officers in my 20+ years in the military that I would just as soon have punched, but it’s respect for the uniform, not the person. ---

Which is weird. Being elected to office really just means you convinced enough people to like or agree with you. Why does that deserve “respect” apart from common politeness or a flag being lowered? Are we appreciating the charisma? ---

Lowering the flag seems to be done a lot more than it used to. It’s done for all sorts of people, whereas it used to be done for presidents and a few others. The president or the governor of the state (or mayor of WDC) can order a flag to half-staff, according to the Flag Code, but there are conditions as outlined [here](https://www.ushistory.org/betsy/faq3.htm#:~:text=According%20to%20the%20Flag%20Code,to%20your%20company%20has%20died.). ---
